There seems to be a lot of you out there who are riding with Grip Puppies over your grips. I was originally going to buy a set of Grip Puppies but I decided to look around at some alternatives before I laid down the cash and came across this product:

Original Grip Buddies

So far, I haven't seen anyone posting here as having purchased or installed these, so I figured I'd be the first to do so, and also provide some pics to go with it.

First of all, I have a GoCruise which I usually keep in the glovebox, but occasionally put on the bike when riding the superslab. Because these Grip Buddies are cut to fit the specified bike, I had to call the manufacturer and see if they could make me a custom-sized set.

There are few times when I feel compelled to speak about a customer-service experience I have, but this is one of those few times. The owner of the business, Dave, obviously believes in his USA-made product and it shows. Both times I called him, he a answered the phone immediately and was very helpful and patient answering all of the questions I had for him. Basically, we ended up deciding that I would need one grip cover cut 3/8" shorter than the standard length, in order to make room for the GoCruise. I went ahead and ordered the shorter cover in addition to a set of the standard-length ones, so that if at some point I decide to not use the GoCruise anymore, I can cover the whole grip with a Grip Buddy. The normal price for a set of two is $19.95 + $5 shipping, and I paid $10 more for the extra cover, for a total of $34.95 shipped.

Today, I came home and checked the mail and my grip covers had arrived! Actually, my new VStream came today too, and I installed that first, so you'll see that in the photos as well.

Included is a pretty thorough set of instructions, which is appreciated. You can also view video installation instructions on their website.

Just out of curiosity, I measured the difference between the regular-length grip covers and the special, shortened one that Dave made for me... 3/8" shorter, just as requested. Of note is that he obviously stitched the velcro to the neoprene AFTER trimming the neoprene to the correct length, not after. As a result, the stitching wasn't compromised as it would have been if I had ordered the regular length and trimmed it myself.

I gathered the grip buddies and a bottle of isopropyl alcohol and proceeded to the garage. Obligatory beauty shot follows:

Here's my bike with the GoCruise installed... you can see why I needed the right-side grip cover to be shorter. I also ended up having to trim the silicone ring that the GoCruise clips to... I used scissors to remove about 1/8" from the silicone ring after I took this photo.

After using some alcohol and a paper towel to clean the spot where I was going to adhere the grip, I peeled the backing off the sticky-backed velcro and placed it so that the seam of the grip buddy is located just past my fingertips when gripping the grip in a normal riding posture. This is explained in detail in the instructions.

Then wrap the grip buddy around and attach the other end to the velcro. This is VERY easy to do.

I actually ended up removing the Grip Buddies and re-installing them wrapping them in the other direction around the grips. This reduced how much I could feel the seams under my thumbs, and also made for a cleaner-looking install. By the way, the seams are not bothersome, and if you install the Grip Buddies in the right position, the seams will only be under your thumbs, which you shouldn't be able to feel much at all if you're wearing gloves. I also imagine that these will break in a little and the seam will smooth out slightly.

The finished installation:

All In all, I'm very pleased with these so far. They seem very durable and well-made. They also come with a 90-day warranty from the manufacturer which seems fair considering the nature of the product. Time will tell if these prove to be as awesome as I'm hoping they are. The guys over on the Beemer forums really seem to like them. I'll post again with some follow up thoughts after I've used them awhile. If you want some, I'd definitely suggest you give Dave a call... he's a great guy to deal with over the phone.

Cheers!

Looks Good ABQ, I'll keep an eye out for your review. Let us know how it affects the Temp on the headed grips. Me Likey! :)

Nice to see a review of a new product. I might give these a try when my current grip puppies wear out. I'm concerned about how a seam may become annoying over time, and of course heat transfer from the heated grips. Looking forward to your long-term impressions of the product. Thanks for posting.

Supposedly they actually have a positive effect on heated grip performance. The manufacturer claims they may actually enhance the performance of the heated grips by evening out heat distribution and holding onto the heat. Time will tell if that is the case. Unfortunately, the weather has begun to turn warm here, so I don't know if I'll get a chance to test this particular aspect of the Grip Buddies before next fall, but I will try and do some testing in the garage. Hmm, maybe this is a good time to pick up one of those fancy infrared thermometers.... :D

Good review. I just removed my grip puppies. Was too much like a sponge in the rain. I hope you can post back what you think when you get some more miles on them.

It would be great not to install another set of Grip Puppies without an air gun. ;)

Okay, I FINALLY got a chance to get out and test these Grip Buddies on a decent length (about 100 mile) ride.

My impressions of these is that they are GREAT! I couldn't feel the seam at all even through one thin layer of leather on the palms of my summer gloves, which is pretty much what I had expected. They are not mushy and I never felt like the grips felt too "fat." I didn't get caught in any rain, so I can't say whether or not they soak up water, but they don't seem to be made out of a type of material that would do that. The surface of the buddies isn't porous, so I don't expect the would soak up much, if any water. And if somehow they did get wet, you could just undo the Velcro and let them sit unwrapped from your bar from a little while to dry.

I also rode with the heated grips turned on and can report that the heat comes through nice and warm, just as I had hoped/expected. The heat seemed to be more evenly distributed through the grips than before, which could just be a placebo effect. The important thing is that the grip heaters still work just fine with these installed.

Final verdict: I can't really find anything to fault about these Grip Buddies. If you have any reservations about the seams, I'll tell you that if you wear gloves (which you should be doing), you won't even notice them.

All in all, I give these a resounding thumbs up! :thumbsupsmileyanim:

Good review ABQ. My set came in the mail and I'll be putting them on soon. For liability reasons they can't mention this, but you can install the Grip Buddies initially by not peeling and sticking, so you can position them better perhaps to put the seams in the ideal place. However, not recommended permanently! As well, I have seen a comment about wrapping the left one direction and the throttle grip the other direction.... will have to check that out when the time comes.

I ordered a set for myself and a friends BMW.

Dave called and I had really fubbed up my order and spent time to make sure I had the right items for the FJR and R1200 RT. Great guy and I would say customer service is better than great.

I have not installed them yet but with the well thought out directions and information posted here it will be no problem.

I have to say I love my Grip Puppies, but these look to be a much better item in a few regards. First and foremost the material will not absorb water and while it never was an issue for me as wet is wet in a rain storm, nice to know when I put my dry gloves back on they will not get wet from my grips.

Install will be way less of a hassle.

I will post up again when I get them on but feel they will be much better than the Grip Puppies in longevity and feel because of the material they are made from.

Great customer service in me getting the right grips the 1st time out so to me that is a way big Plus right out of the gate.

I agree great guy and great customer service. I installed mine but haven't taken bike out yet.

Hmmm...I recently bought a pair and put them on my bike but they do not seem to cover as much of the grip as yours do. I love them BTW, but perhaps I got the wrong size? I will have to reach out to Dave to see if I goofed and ordered the wrong size.

It's quite possible you ordered or received the wrong size. They should cover the whole grip. I'm sure Dave will make it right.

Did you strrrretttch them round the grip as per the excellent instructions? I fitted mine at w/e and they fitted perfectly all the way round but do have to be stretched to butt the ends together. Or are you talking about the grip length?

Only been on a commute trip (14 miles) even but without the Cramp Buster fitted I definetely found them to be more comfortable (compliant and the increase in diameter helps) and the tingling vibes are not so evident. If you ordered them for a FJR they should fit unless as per ABQFJR the wrong one's were sent to you.

Hoping the TBS and spring unwind this weekend will improve matters further.

I'm guessing he meant that they weren't long enough to fit from one end of the grip to the other. Of course, that's just MY opinion, I COULD be wrong... :D :D :D

Still very very happy with mine! I can't imagine riding without them.

Dave...you and I have spoken via email. I received the wrong length grip and you are sending me the correct length, gratis. So I consider it all good. With that said even though they are short I must say I really love the feel of them and like the thicker grips.

Just wanted to encourage those who have bought and installed my Original Grip Buddies, to share their installations with us here on the forum. . . . . . . . . . .Inquiring minds want to know.

Dave R.
Dave,

Any reason why you did not make a solid tube of neoprene rather than a sheet with velcro closure?

Ed
