Hi there I am researching the FJR as my next bike!

My current bike is a 2006 Suzuki DR650, I bought it new and just hit 44,000 miles. 44K would not be much on a FJR but let me tell you, its a lot of miles on a 650 thumper

!

I am going to set up the DR for mostly dirt and I need a more road worthy steed for commuting and, hopefully, some touring.

Here in California lane splitting is legal and I have many, many miles of experience and I am curious how wide the FJR is and how high above the ground the widest point is.

I suppose the widest point is the mirrors? Per my research, the widest point is 29.5 inches, is that correct?

On my DR650 the widest point is 34 inches at the mirrors and due to the hight of the bike, the mirror are at the same height at most SUV mirrors

Thanks Ignacio for the reply. I knew what the width was I just wanted to confirm the wide point was the mirrors. My question is how high above ground are the mirrors?

Hey, first off WELCOME to the site!!

I just went out to the garage and measured my 2008, keep in mind it's on the center stand........it measures 45 inches from the top of the mirror to the ground.

Did anyone verify the 29.5" width question for the OP? I just looked at my first gen and it's more like 39" with the side bags on, and the FZ1 mirrors are even wider than that at 43".

I assume that the OP will not swap out the 2nd gen mirrors and will be running bag-less since lane splitting is his desire, but I still think the mirrors must stick out more than 29.5"

The FZ1 mirrors on my '03 are 44" wide**, the ends of the bars are 32" wide.

There are times - both on the freeway when traffic slows/stops, and when "filtering" at traffic lights - when I just reach up and fold my mirrors in.

**44" is the same width as the mirrors on my Wingabago, and I've done plenty of lane-splitting on that beast!

Thanks for the replies. Sound like I should be able to lane split ok with the FJR, I just need to get my tail down to a dealer and look at an actual machine.

Go for the AE if you plan lane splitting a lot! I have no problem with the bike width. It's fun to flip gear change with a finger or thumb!

Hmm.....might not want to get a AE if he plans on selling it at some point, I could be wrong but I think the clutch type FJR outsells the AE quite a bit.

Anyone know for sure?

James Burleigh to the white courteous phone please. I looked for his videos of lane splitting on way to work in Berkeley but could not find them.
Hello, all. I tend to keep my mirrors on the bike when I commute.

And of course have never had any problem. Well, sure, I've nicked a car mirror here and there, once in awhile. And I always commute with my bags too, and use my mirrors as my whiskers: if those make it, so can the bags. In fact, I think the bags are narrower, because getting the bike into my side yard past the fence gate the other day, I had to do one mirror then the other; bags no problem. And I've done that in thick, backed-up, downtown San Francisco traffic: slowing and paddle-walking the bike past cars to thread the mirrors around car mirrors. I'll see about posting that splitting vid again. When I watch it I sometimes cringe that I could get through a certain space, but there I went.

I have FZ1 mirrors and lane split with and without bags on. FZ1 mirrors extend the total width of the bike beyond the width of the bags. If the mirrors clear the bags will follow. Lights on high beam and two fingers on the brake lever! Use horn as needed!!

I don't have any problem with width or height of FJR for lane splitting. My commute is around 15 miles one way. If I feel the space narrower, I slow down or stop. But commute is just a side job of my FJR. I didn't buy it for commute but for going long distance or places. It's been great so far. Smile on my face every time I throw my leg over the saddle.
