As a curiosity how is this process? Fly in, meet seller, inspect bike etc. Say everything in order, then what? Seller signs the back of the title. What about registration and insurance? Do you have to go to the local DMV and get a temporary registration? Do you call your insurance company in advance? How does this go?

I'm doing one next week...of sorts. My brother is buying a new 2016 ES at D&H in Culver on Saturday 6/25. He will fly and ride. I will ride to Culver and stay over on 6/24, then ride with him to Blairsville, GA and on north through the Blue Ridge and Smokies. Nice little break-in ride.

He'll have to get the 600 mile service done along the way!

That should occur about the time we pass through Virginia. Volunteering?

Hey Tom, make sure you put "Cullman" into the GPS as your destination, or you might just end up back in Cali!

Bring it on another 45 minutes to B'ham and well grab dinner and a beer or two Friday night.

If I didn't already have a family reunion Saturday I'd ride up and see Jerrol and Renae with ya!

BTW - my fly and ride is set. Bought a one way Southwest ticket (only $285) to the Mile High city today. Leaving July 22nd, get in Denver at 10 am on a Friday morning. The (super nice) seller is delivering the sweet '08 to me at the Denver airport. From there I will Iron Butt my way back to Alabama over the weekend. I'll be delivering the bike to my buddy on the evening of the 24th in Birmingham.

Cullman it is! I didn't catch that I had put Culver in my post, twice, it was before I started planning the trip down.

Sure. If you want to come this far east.

Probably not, but thanks for the offer. How strict is Yamaha about hitting the service at 600 miles?

Saturday Day 1 265 miles from Cullman to Balirsville on twisty roads

Sunday Day 2, 325 mile loop on Warwoman, 28, Deals Gap, Cherohala Pkwy and back south to Blairsville

Monday Day 3, 360 miles Blairsville to Wytheville via Blue Ridge Pkwy.

Tuesday Day 4, Head for home

Somewhere there needs to be a service but I don't have a clue where to get it. I would guess it has to be on a Monday, and somewhere north of Georgia and south of Virginia. How about Blue Ridge Yamaha and Polaris, or do we backtrack to Cullman on Monday losing a day of riding? Final option...buy oil, filter and final drive fluid and DIY on Sunday night in Blairsville. I can take tools and torque wrenches.

That IBA link is really handy and adaptable. If I can find the thread about what D&H is selling new FJRs for I would seriously consider a F-n-R. I'm jealous of y'all who are making these jaunts.

Not to hijack the thread, but if you're buying new and the trip is over 600 miles, or say 887, is the oil change the most critical part of that service? If so, couldn't you do the oil change in the parking lot of an auto parts store? Take the 17mm socket, the 3 or 4mm hex, a ratchet and get it done? Buy a catch pan, and "donate" it or toss it?

Maybe pack one of those two-port USB 12v socket plug in a carry-on with the cables as well so that you can charge stuff. If the route is simple then a GPS would be overkill, but who would pack a GPS and a mounting kit to set up? Or just use a phone and pull over to view the route when there are questions? Or just pretend you're not lost and enjoy the ride? :)
