Im not a fan of trailering my FJR but from time to time it happens.

With the Canyon Dancer bar mounts, there is a small section on the upper corner of the fairing that the tie downs can touch, this is not good for the paint.

On the old bike a piece of duct tape worked great but with the matte it leaves too much residue. I was thinking maybe painters tape on the fairing and also wrap some soft material around the tie down strap.

Any other suggestions?

You have the same idea that I would use. Painters tape on the bike with a soft cloth wrapped around the strap (Held with painters tape in non touching areas)

I hope to see the bike (And maybe do some miles with you) when you are in Florida !

I use duck tape on shinny surfaces or when it will be there for a while, and gaffers tape for matte surfaces or if it will only be on for a day. The gaffers tape looks like duck tape but it is different. It's not as much a mess to pull and clean off, but stays in place much better that painters tape.

I dumped my canyon dancers as they put so much strain on the bars and can scratch the paint. Now I use soft ties up under the front fairing and attach to the fork clamps. Problems solved and bike is much more secured.

This is the best solution, but if you can't use this method because of tie down locations, update to Canyon Dancers II. They widen the strap location and there is no contact on painted fairing parts. I know many folks worry about Canyon Dancers placing too much pressure on the handle bars but I have successfully hauled FJRs several thousand miles with no damage. With the Canyon Dancer II handle bar straps I do pad the grips with a micro fiber rag to prevent any chaffing on the grips or rubbing on the handle bar end weights. Another tip is there is no reason to torque the forks down more than half of their stroke, use tie down straps with a device to prevent the S hook from accidentally unhooking, and tie the rear of the bike down to prevent the bike from shifting. I tie off on the rear foot peg supports with light tension and the bike rides rock solid.

Soft straps on you hand grips. I've loaded my bike a hundred times useing the hand grips. wrap a mechanics rag around the strap itself if it looks like it might touch the paint.I've never lost a bike OR damaged it. 3 strap system.

Get the sheepskin seatbelt shoulder protector from Wally world, they will fit around the strap and has Velcro on the inside to hold them around the strap and there is no rag or tape to come off and they can be put away and used again later if needed, I have did this method many times and they work great.
