(Background: MANY years ago, I was a spray painter of the house, factory, aircraft parts, fine furniture and even some auto and motorcycle work variety. So, I'm not without some skills and knowledge, out of date as they may be. I've got a compressor, water trap, large production gun (too big), Badger air brush, and will probably pick up a small touch up gun.)
On my '03 XX, I need to touch up the very outside of my right mirror and a recent stupidity exercise gave me 4 relatively small areas on my right lower fairing that also need to be touched up. (Expecting to use air brush for the color coat.)
On my FJR, I need to repaint the scratched saddlebags (I am hell on panniers), and paint the outside sections of my top box (should have been blue, but I got a silver one, and the silver would look great in the center section with the outsides Blue to match the bike. (Needing touch up gun for the color and clear.)
I'll probably get the paint fhrough Color-Rite and will also call them, but value the more specific motorcycle knowledge I'll likely find here.
The questions:
1. I'm pretty sure both bikes are cleared over the color coats. Just to be sure, can anyone confirm, and if so, do you know if they're two component clear coats or single? If it doesn't matter, any preferences??
2. What is the best filler for scratches in the plastic and/or paint and what exactly is the sequence of filler, sanding and buffing process to do this?
3. I'm assuming that if I touch up the scratches on the lower fairing and mirror, I'll need to clear the whole panel and mirror to make it look right. Any suggestions beyond that? (I'm planning on painting the whole of the panniers and the outsides of the top box with blue, and then clearing the whole of all three.)
Muchas gracias for any expert wisdom.
