I am in need of a passport. I have a Alaska trip planned for the end of May till mid June. My brother and I are going to the Ron Ayres' Hyder Seek dinner, just for the Halibut..... I know it is still 6 months away but I hear it takes some time to receive it. I was hoping someone has used a service that is not to expensive and was reliable. Any help or link would be great. Thanks Smitty

I went to the local post office to do mine. The wait has gotten ALOT better over the last several months. If you're over 2 months out, you'll have no problem at all. All the info you need is right HERE I hope your trip goes well B)

Ditto. It was fast and easy. The postmaster took my pic and processed the paperwork for me. It wasn't cheap, but it's because passports cost so much. I think the post office charged me something like $30, and that included the photos and postage.

Not all post offices do passports. And your probably better off getting one through a post office in or near Hooterville. Can't imagine doing something like that in St. Louis.

Smitty,

You might check around a bit -

I used the post office for mine - went smooth, not to much of a wait for it.

When it was time for my kids and wife to get one, we found that a nearby city's library offered a passport service - they would do all the paperwork, take your photo, and submit your check for your passport. Kind of one stop shopping. They charge a 35.00 fee for this - but they use it to buy books. I thought it was a pretty good idea - they run a lot of folks through there because it's hassle free, and it's for a good cause.

Good Luck !

I got mine back in 2002, and had it in a fairly decent time. This of course was before all of this waiting nonsense thats happening now. I went to my local City Clerks office and they processed my paperwork. I had to bring in my photo, but I just went down to a Walgreens and got that taken care of.

Applying now is the best time. People should already have their's for the holiday travel and your trip is far enough away that paying for expedited services is pointless. I wouldn't waste money on a service company either.

Here's a tip from my passport experience this past spring: If you have someone else besides the Post Office take the picture (we used Walgreen's cause they were cheaper) make sure there is no glare on the lenses if anyone wears glasses. The post office may make you retake them at their higher fee if there is. (Walgreen's did refund us, btw.)

Wife and I renewed ours and got a new one for the toddler last February for an end of June trip. We hit the rush right after it was mandated that passports were necessary - lines were out the door at the post office - BUT, we got them in plenty of time for the trip. Go now, you should be golden for next May without coughing up the extra fee for "expedited service" and you shouldn't need to go to a private service either.

Do it now while you have plenty of time. Check with the Post Office (some offer/some don't). For simplicity, let them do the photo (plus you'll know that the photo will be correct; they do have requirements). If you wait too long, and you need an expedited Passport, it's gonna cost you, so do it while there's no rush.

Instead of wasting time looking for a "service" that still has to send the paperwork through the same channels, just hit the PO now and quit waiting. Time is your enemy. Don't delay.

I got mine 2 weeks ago. I used a local PO. Paid a total of $205 for expedited service, and I had it in 7 days. No kidding.

Smitty,

Hope to see and meet you at Hyder seek, have you regerstered yet? Hope you got your passport worked out.

I went last year, but was unable to ride I broke my wrist and just got the cast off before I left. This year I plan on doing the 48++ ride and ending at Hyder Seek this yaer.

Any chance you could do a cruise control install while you are up there??? ;)

I bought a CCU from Iggy.

If you ride instead of flying, you shouldn't need one yet?
He will need one when he crosses through Canada.
Yep.
An American doesn't need a passport to get into Canada, a drivers licence and some proof of citizenship or residence is all you need.

Do Americans need a passport to get back into their own country now? I can drive into the US with only a drivers licence and birth certificate. I only need a passport if I'm flying. Call your travel agent, they will know.

Although having a passport is preferable.
