It's pricey, but I love my iPhone.
I'll confess. I think those are pretty freakin' nifty. They're right out of the sci-fi novels I devoured in my youth. I'm just a cheapskate and averse to the monthly charges it takes to use all the features. And when I look at the scratches on the clamshell phone I carry in my pocket -- well, it would make me sob if it was an iPhone.

Tres cool, though.

I had the same fear, but this video put an end to those. (Not that I would try this at home!)

All in all it's a great, thin little device to have in your pocket.

We can tell you in a lot of posts what we prefer, but hopefully you've noticed what we use the mobile devices for. I think your decision will be based on what you take away from reading about our habits.

Personally, I could do without the mobile phone. The roads I travel on are rarely deserted and I think any good Samaritan would be nice enough to let you borrow their phone for a call. Or if that's not your cup o joe, get a pre-paid service (any of the national carriers offer them) with a cheap no-frills phone.

If you prefer an all-in-one device like a smartphone, go try them. I know Sprint (no affiliation) offers a 30-day risk-free trial. I used it to try something (I'll get to that in a sec) and just paid for one month of service, no term fees, etc. I'm sure the others would offer similar plans. Or ask co-workers, friends, neighbors if you could take a peek at their smartphones or ask them to show you the features.

If you have a small laptop (sub-10lbs) with a PC-Card slot would you consider a "broadband card" service? That's what I tested from Sprint. At the time they offered a 56k speed (might be faster now) as a basic service. You could travel with the laptop and get an internet connection almost anywhere. With a phone service like Skype (no affiliation) you could make relatively cheap calls too. This is what I'm seriously considering should I change employers and not have a mobile phone provided. I don't make a lot of calls while I'm traveling and I never use my mobile phone while riding (while stopped I might). I'm also nervous that I'll lose that expensive work-provided crackberry so it stays tucked away. To me a small laptop would provide a wider array of possibilities too; you could store/upload your road reports, pictures, a TON of maps for your GPS device, etc etc etc.

My other $.02 (nickel if adjusted for inflation)
