The April/May edition of Machinist's Workshop did a test of penetrating oils where they measured the force required to loosen rusty test devices. Buy the issue if you want to see how they did the test. The results reported were interesting. The lower the number of pounds the better.

Penetrating oil .. Average load .. Price per fluid ounce

None ................. 516 pounds ..

WD-40 .............. 238 pounds .. $0.25

PB Blaster ......... 214 pounds .. $0.35

Liquid Wrench ... 127 pounds .. $0.21

Kano Kroil ......... 106 pounds .. $0.75

ATF-Acetone mix.. 53 pounds .. $0.10

The ATF-Acetone mix was a 50/50 mix (1 to 1 ratio).

I guess we need Rad to pull out an engine with frozen exhaust manifold bolts and see if his results are similar :p

Disclaimer: Just copying what I saw, I have no idea if this is true or not. Acetone is very unfriendly to many finishes and plastic.

I can definitely vouch for the effectiveness of Kroil. Been using it for years and it works better than anything I have ever seen. Never tried ATF-acetone though.........

50/50 mix of brake fluid and kerosene...

Been using it for years on our farm tractors for everything from stuck valves to rusty nuts & bolts.

JUST DON'T GET IT ON YOUR PAINT!!!!

Sea Foam has a spray version of it's Special Blend that works well. Mostly Stoddard solvent, pretty light, wicks well, I've had good luck with it, it's what we use here at the sweathouse. Never heard of Kroil before. Rusty manifold bolts respond best to the blue release agent.

"Blue release agent" = hot blue flame?

Oooooh, a Smoke-Wrench! Now I get it.

You Northern folk will call things anything.

I can't believe you guys! This topic has gone on for more than 5 posts and nobody has mentioned one of the best penetrating oils available: KY

That's only because we couldn't measure the average load.

For me Kroil is the best. I work in power plants and on boilers. Tried all the rest.

Kroil, Loctite, and anti-sieze stay on my workbench.

+1 on the Kroil. Straight ATF down the plug hole on a seized up motor that's been sittin a while...
