The word from the Neurologist is that I have a herniated disc at C5-C6, which is pressing on my spinal cord. The disc needs to be removed and the two bones fused. Insurance approval will be done today, then I have to wait for a letter from the surgeon and schedule an appointment.

It's possible that the work may be done at the hospital where I work, by one of the neurosurgeons that I know and work with.

Best of luck, prayers and mojo to you. That doesn't sound pleasant, but women deal with pain better than men for the most part. Hope you're back to 100% and on your bikes ahead of schedule.

Jill, Sorry to hear that you have to have surgery. I hope that you have the same results that I had with the same surgery. It's been 12 years and no other issues. :D

Is a disc replacement an option? I'm having that done on August 29th. In my case, it appears to be a great alternative to a fusion. Insurance authorization on the procedure is a minefield, but it has worked out through my wife's office's coverage, Pacific Source. Either way, good luck to you on this.

Wow, surgery, that was out of left field. Sorry to hear the news, but will be glad when you are feeling better soon. Jean and I will check in on you this weekend.

Owwwwieeeeee!!!!
Is that as a result of an injury, or just some degenerative thing?
Who knows? It could be age related. I'm 45 and have heard of younger people needing this done. My job involves a lot of lifting. I ride a lot of miles on my bikes. I got rear-ended about ten years ago. The other driver was doing about 60mph and I was stopped. The force was enough to total both trucks. The ER doc at the time said I was OK.

I'm guessing it's a cumulative effect of all of the above.

Thankfully, I'm OK with idea of surgery. The hospital environment is a familiar one for me. I want to get this show on the road, so I can start the healing, and get back to the bikes.

Best of luck with your surgery. And welcome to the club (c5-c6-c7 here).

SP, i know you are a nirse and have a lot of knowledge of the med field, but I would take a second look at being cut on.

What does a doctor do for a living he likes to cut on people and hope to make them better. Some times it does and sometimes it dosen't.

Have you tried alternative non invasive medical ways to help repair this? As you know there are doctors that specialize this

form of medicine, maybe it is wortha look at.

I hae known several people that have had that done to them and none were an improvement, some got worse.

Just playing the devil's advocate. good luck with what ever choice you make and always keep a :) on your face

Thanks for the advice. All points of view are welcomed. The doc that recommended the surgery is a neurologist i.e. not a surgeon. He explained that the disc is impinging on my spinal cord. Something has to be done quickly, or the injury could soon become a lot worse. Before looking at my MRI, this doc mentioned some non-invasive therapies, but after seeing the evidence, he strongly recommends surgery ASAP.

All of the surgeons in the group that I'm going to, are guys that I work with. I can vouch for each and every one of them with respect to their competence and professional integrity. One of them even rides several bikes!!! You can be sure that I will have a lot of questions for them before that first cut.

Best of luck and a happy and healthy recovery. When you are completely healed there will be a calling and it will be from your fjr
