As many of you know, we lost two of our five cats this summer. They had lived long and happy lives but their absence left a big hole since they were the most affectionate of the tribe. To date, our biggest reason for not getting a dog was the presence of the older cats. Now that they were gone, we decided to adopt a dog.

A lot of research went into this, and we decided that a puppy would be a better option for us despite all the extra work involved. We're hoping he will grow up tolerating the three cats, and that they can get used to him while he's still relatively small.

Our local Humane society promised a delivery of puppies last weekend, from an out of town shelter. Husband Andy, son Martin and I all picked out the same dog while we were waiting in line, so it was obvious that he was our choice. Twelve week old Siegfried came home with us. He is a German Shepherd / Rottweiler mix and weighs 18lbs so far.

We're all learning a lot, perhaps the owners more than the dog. I found out that puppy teeth are very sharp. Until a few weeks ago, I'd never heard of the Dog Whisperer but now I'm avidly watching his DVD's. This is a dog that's going to need a lot of training while he's young, otherwise he'll be a monster.

Siggy is at home in the garage with all the bikes running. Even firing up the Warrior, with it's HD-style pipes didn't bother him. He'll be learning about camping with dirt bikes pretty soon.

Cute pup! And I like the name!

Some good friends of ours have a shepherd / rottweiler mix. She's a helluva good dog!

And with that "cross" of breeds, she won't be too big.

Neither will she eat much or "deposit" much. arh-arh-arh-arh humor...

If SHE were a girl, I might agree but Siegfried is a boy dog. He already eats much and deposits even more. His paws predict that he's going to do a lot more growing before he's done.

We chose the name Siegfried in honor of a fictional vet. PBS showed an English TV series called 'All Creatures Great And Small' about a veterinary practice in our home county of Yorkshire, England. The vets were James Herriott, Siegfried and Tristan Farnon.

Yesterday, Siggy surprised us with his ability to get through the kitty door. Today, he showed us how to remove the locking panel for the kitty door.

And don't be surprised when he enlarges the kitty door as he grows!

I had a German Shepard/Lab mix that could chew through anything...

Great looking dog!

Great Job Penguin, another rescue. Watch out this is my little fellow 4 years later

Congrats, they look like a great addition!

The books "All Creatures Great And Small' by James Herriot were great reads for those that like to read.

Me thinks you can kiss that door GOOD-BYE!!!!

He's a cutie and will put a dent in your budget in many ways I'm sure. But he'll also steal your heart as I'm sure he already has. I had to put down an adoptee choc. lab/golden retriever mix this last July and I sure miss that brown mound-o-love.

Congrats on the rescue and good luck to your cats :ermm: :ermm:

Socialize, socialize, socialize!

Harley stands by ready to teach the young pup the fine art of sharing and chewing bones!

Good for you two! Two Woof Woofs!

Gracious thanks to Harley D. Dog. I'm looking forward to introducing the dogs to each other. Siggy is an easy going kinda guy. He has already mastered chewing bones but the problem is that he likes ankle bones, shin bones and knee bones. I'm short enough that even a thigh bone was fair game. That's one of the many habits we have to train him out of. :)

It looks as thought you've got a handful there Jill. How are the cats taking to him? Any claws to the nose yet? I loved that series, "All Creatures Great and Small."

He looks like a real winner Jill!

Absolutely handsome dog.

Good luck with getting him trained.

I have watched "The Dog Whisperer" many times. He seems to be able to work miracles sometimes.

I tend to be too easy on dogs.

We got our Chocolate Lab when he was 10 lbs, and our 5 cats definitely imprinted on him his place in the pecking order. He's 3 years old now and weighs 10 times as much, but his place in the pecking order is still no where near the top! It's terribly funny to see the reaction of other dogs when they visit - kinda looking at him like, "What are you nuts? They're just cats!" :)

That's a wonderful holiday gift you have there, Jill! Merry Christmas!

We've declared one wing of the house to be dog-free territory. The cats have our son's room and Andy's office to themselves. Their food and litter pan is kept safe by a baby gate. We're hoping to have doggie well trained before the time comes that he can either open, or jump the gate.

So far, the cats haven't got close enough to use claws. There's been a lot of hissing. Siggy is usually either leashed or in his crate, when he's indoors, so he hasn't had many chances to play chase-the-cat.
