As many of you know, we lost two of our five cats this summer. They had lived long and happy lives but their absence left a big hole since they were the most affectionate of the tribe. To date, our biggest reason for not getting a dog was the presence of the older cats. Now that they were gone, we decided to adopt a dog.
A lot of research went into this, and we decided that a puppy would be a better option for us despite all the extra work involved. We're hoping he will grow up tolerating the three cats, and that they can get used to him while he's still relatively small.
Our local Humane society promised a delivery of puppies last weekend, from an out of town shelter. Husband Andy, son Martin and I all picked out the same dog while we were waiting in line, so it was obvious that he was our choice. Twelve week old Siegfried came home with us. He is a German Shepherd / Rottweiler mix and weighs 18lbs so far.
We're all learning a lot, perhaps the owners more than the dog. I found out that puppy teeth are very sharp. Until a few weeks ago, I'd never heard of the Dog Whisperer but now I'm avidly watching his DVD's. This is a dog that's going to need a lot of training while he's young, otherwise he'll be a monster.
Siggy is at home in the garage with all the bikes running. Even firing up the Warrior, with it's HD-style pipes didn't bother him. He'll be learning about camping with dirt bikes pretty soon.
