I spent two days on the roads here in the Pacific Northwet this week.

January is actually the Moon of the Sand and Gravel Corners. Be careful on those roads. I ruined a perfect good pair of shorts Friday.

Peter Egan's The Moon of the Slippery Wet Leaves Article in the February issue of Cycle World came to my mind as I tried to clean the stain out my shorts.

It sometimes appears as if the corners in PA are paved with loose gravel.

Eventually you develop the technique for dealing with it and get used to it.

But until you do two wheel drifting, though unsettling, is not uncommon.

Then someone came along and helped you up and helped pick up your FJR? ;) I hope it wasn't worse than a big scare that ended without paint and plastic damage (but a pair of Fruit of the Loom that needed replacement).

Yeah, this is the time of year to be on the adv style bike as all the junk on the pavement is like riding off road.

Fruit of the Looms were all that need replacement.

 
I ride the PNW everyday and concur with the Moon of the Sand and Gravel. I really enjoyed that article and seem to enjoy most of Peter Egans articles. For me, the "trick" to handling this gravel is to ride sloooow, straight, and upright. In other words, start really wide, turn in, then straight and upright, a little more turn, then more straight and upright. Very little lean (if any).

IDK if this is everyones way to do it, but it's kept me and my scooter off the pavement all winter so far!!

 
Niehart glad to hear your shorts are the only casualty.

Last year I decided that I will not ride some secondary roads such as Mosquito Lake Rd until the road is clear. Instead I decided to ride the major state highways I usually avoid in mid summer such as Hwy 101 around the Peninsula. Yeah some of the state highway are not as interesting but the back roads present more risk than I am willing to accept.

Roads are absolute garbage this time of year...glad only the shorts got soiled Pops!

Until things clear a little, I'm sticking with Fontana's plan and riding the main roads. Let's hope for an early spring!

Wet pine needles ain't no fun either.

Perhaps it's time to buy a Ural for riding those back roads of the Northwet, just think of all the pies you could haul in that underpowered ride.

Hubert Kriegel is traveling the world on a URAL. He is an very interesting person - his web site is the best world traveler web site I have seen. Check it out. His site convinced me I decided don't have the temperament and disposition to be a world traveler. To many slippery pine needles out there. Thanks Hubert - pronounced U-bear.

Sorry to hear about your bad pine need experience.

I can get some pine needle pics posted if there is demand.
