DAY 00.1..........the journey home begins

Damn, it's been a fine week so far. Got my PAIR blockoffs from Joe2Lmaker. Expecting the APE manual CCT from Brodie any day. And I get a call from some guy from North Carolina a couple of hours ago, telling me he's 10 minutes from my house:

Way to go, Grumpy!!! He pulls off an 11 hour drive in 9, ticket free (at least I think so) and there's a naked 03 FJR sitting in my garage, ready to be cannnibalized.

Jim and the lovely Judy are a great couple. Looking forward to spending the day with Grumpy tomorrow. He swears like a sailor. He'll feel right at home!

Gonna pull some stuff off his bike tonight to get ready to drop the motor tomorrow.

And then the fun begins!

Go Howie Go! :good: What ya figure, this weekend?

Think you'd better break out the top shelf stuff fer Grumpy.

I wish you well with this little task, RH.

My .02: don't rush it, it's been a long time coming, it's worth getting it together right first time.

Top Shelf for Grumpy Indeed!! :drinks:

Ohhh Man Howie, The chocks have been removed and you are cleared for Take Off!! :yahoo:

It won't be long now!! :clapping:

Sent Jim and Judy on to the hotel. They could use the break. 600 mile drive sucks it right outta ya, y'know.

So I got started on preliminary "item" removal to facilitate dropping Grumpy's motor tomorrow.

Thank the Feejer Gods he had already undertaken some of the "crap" work to get the job done.

Here's the donor with the recipient behind it. Thank goodness all the plastic is already off. That saves about 1 1/2 hours of work:

Day_003.jpg

Radiator and exhaust system already gone. Another 2 1/2 hours saved:

Day_004.jpg

Airbox was already out of the bike, so I pulled the fuel rail and throttle bodies to make it easier to clear the frame when the motor is dropped. Also removed the PAIR system, coolant pipe and thermostat with hoses:

Day_005.jpg

What the heck.....let's pull the rear wheel, the pumpkin, the shifter & foot peg assembly and get the U-joint outta there:

Day_006.jpg

Grumpy had already pulled the front fender and brakes off, the the front end assembly is ready to come off by loosening 6 pinch bolts. Still have to pull the wheel first, but that's a 2 minute job with the brakes gone:

Day_007.jpg

And last for tonight, a naked FJR about the become even MORE naked tomorrow.

Day_008.jpg

I'm juiced, because so much work had already been done before the donor arrived. LOT of piddlin' ****, if ya know what I mean.

Basically, there's 9 motor mounts to remove and out she comes. Shouldn't take long at all.

+1 on the recco to take your time and do it right the 1st time.

The adrenaline is addictive, but you want to do a good job.

(and it look like you get a nice looking bagster tank cover in the deal!)

PERV ALERT

That's a least the second guy that Howie has met at that gas station!!

I know because that was where we met one Sunday afternoon :D

Howie give me a shout if I can be of help

Kind of hate to ask this, but that's never stopped me. :) So, since it looks like grumpy isn't going to have much left after this why not put your plastic on his frame and give him your old bike?

+1 Exactly what I was thinking....

Mi amigo Bust: Will Howie's project get finished in my lifetime? I've already had a massive heart attack, I turn 61 on 10/28 and I ride with SkooterG and Fairlaner on a regular basis. I have got one foot in the grave and the other on a balama peel!

Gonna treat the Grumpster and his lovely SO to dinner and drinks tonight, so the bar will be open and the choice is his. :)

NOT this weekend. Probably take a little longer than that. It was a pure miracle I was able to take off 2 days just to get THIS far into the project. I'm giving myself 'til the end of October. That's my goal...to be out terrorizing little kiddies Halloween night. I've got a "Barry" mask that ought scare the **** outta ANYTHING!

Wait.....maybe not.....don't want any sheep following me home! :dribble:

Unfortunately, the tank bra got torn up in Grumpy's get-off. No good. :(

But doesn't matter....I'm just after the mill.

Glad you offered. My plans are to put everything back together except the plastic and fire it up. If everything starts and runs okay, I'll drive the bike a few days without the plastic, just to make it easy to get to anything that isn't 100%. If there IS an issue, I'll drop you a note so we can do a "side-by-side" comparo to diagnose any issues.

I appreciate the offer.

Oh, on the first thing you mentioned....there's a fine selection of "lonely wimminz" that hang out at that gas station. I'm a regular, so they don't mind me using it as a rendezvous point. Thanks for bringing it up. :finger:

Couple of easy reasons....lots of his stuff is already gone, it's NOT an ABS, and I keep my VIN. His is a 03, so I'll have the sleeper 04....better looking bike, but with the faster motor. I'll have to put a vanity plate on my FJR so you'll know who it is that passed yer ***!

I'm gonna put this project in "fast track" mode just for you, Don. :)

Day 02..........things happen fast -- sometimes!

So I get a call from Grumpy this morning, about 8am. He's about to pull into my driveway so we can get to work. NOPE...NEED COFFEE FIRST!

So I fix us a pot, we shoot the **** for a while then head out to the garage. As I mentioned earlier in the thread, we're at the point where all we need to do is jack up the motor a bit, pull the motor mount bolts and drop the sucker.

Day_01a-1.jpg

Used the same method for Grumpy's motor removal as I did on mine.....no hoist, just pull the front end off (a snap with no brakes or ABS in the way) push the rear end of the bike down while on the centerstand to lift the frame off the motor:

Day_01b-1.jpg

Day_01c-1.jpg

Day_01d-1.jpg

And Grumpy, doing the HARD work.....using his meager weight to push the frame down as I roll the motor out the front. Think we'll give him a name worthy of his part in this phase of the project.....let's call him "Jack" since he was holding up the frame.

NOTE: The new aftermarket headers.....eco-friendly and completely recycleable. One-by-two southern pine. Smells YUMMY when the motor's running.

And there she sits....a (relatively) low mileage 03 motor, ready for rebirth:

Day_01e-1.jpg

Day_01f-1.jpg

Stick the front end, rear wheel assy. and tank back on the bike and roll 'er back on the trailer:

Day_01g.jpg

Day_01h.jpg

Day_01i.jpg

Ready to head back to North Carolina for future cannibalizing. :)

TIme it took? Started up at 8:35am. Back on the trailer and strapped down, ready to roll, 10:05am. Hour and a half sound good? Actually, not counting the time too old farts are standing around, telling lies and drinking coffee, probably an honest hour. The most time consuming part was hoisting that damn back wheel and getting the splines to line up so the axle would go back in. That wheel and tire gets HEAVY when yer an old and outta shape old fuker like me.

One last bit of work before Jim and Judy head back to the hotel. Gotta pull the stator out of the donor. It's going back to N.C. with Grumpy. Besides, it's an Electrosux, and I don't run a bunch of amp-eating electricals, so off it comes:

Day_01j.jpg

Off Jim and Judy go, to relax up for dinner and spirits tonight.

I need some parts before the install can begin. Like a new CCT, cam chain and various gaskets, and some preliminary work to do, like stator swap from the old motor to the new, valve check/adjust, cam chain installation, so I'm pretty much at a stopping point right now. But hell, I'm in a working mood!

What to do...what to do???

Oh yeah.....I got some bling to install on the motor, so I grab the new PAIR block-offs so generously donated by Joe2Lmaker. Some pics first.

Old cover plate, reed valve and new plate, without the PAIR hose attachment nipple:

Day_01k.jpg

Close-up of the reed valve that goes back in the valve cover. Note the little projection on top of the valve assy. It fits into the recess J2LM has machined into the backside of the replacement blockoff plate.

Day_01l.jpg

All three plates installed and the top of the motor lookin' good!

Day_01m.jpg

(I didn't say "clean"....I said GOOD!)

That's about as far as I can go right now til I have new parts in hand. Gotta go call Gary at Mondak.

Stay tuned.....and thanks for playing along!

'Howie

Looks good!

Ought to put something in those plug holes or you'll end up doing all this again right after you start it up.
