Ride it for a while before you do much more. You will be amazed at how much stuff you don't need. congrats on the purchase. I demo'd one a month ago and loved it but if I replace my 06 no one will know I got a new bike. lol

Congrats on new bike! You might check out the "Stealth Backrest". Bought one for my wife who never rode and now I have a hard time riding without her. Anyway she likes the backrest and it is very easy to install and take off when needed.

I picked up my new bike yesterday and I love it already. I only had a chance to put about 20 miles on it before taking the family out for dinner (for the 17yo's birthday) but it was a great 20 miles. The FJR is a step (or three) up from anything I've had before and I'm already very happy with it. Now for Farkles... (oh, and I saw a list somewhere of HRF [highly recommended farkles] but can't find it again so feel free to point me in the right direction). Sliders and headlight protectors already on order.

Here's the obligatory photo (though it's in my driveway; nowhere very scenic):

The blue is a beautiful color. It's great to have an FJR, ain't it! :D

Farkles? Safety and comfort, in that order. Under "safety," more lighting, front and rear. See and be seen, even if your riding is ALL daytime. I have--and swear by--Clearwater LED lighting for lots of reasons. Seeing and being seen are the main ones. Expensive and worth it. Lots of hits if you search for it (search tip: search by typing into Google "subject site:fjrforum.com," which for this subject would be "Clearwater site:fjrforum.com." You'll keep busy all night with the results. Rear lighting is just as important. Several good options there too. You want it bright and you want it to flash annoyingly. Whelen, Clearwater, Hyperlites, and more. Great quality gear is a big one in this category too. Just ask a veteran of a nice tumble while well geared up (me). Glad I had my CyclePort kevlar suit on (p.s. ATGATT should go without saying).

Comfort, there's no end to it. Includes seating, windscreen, highway pegs, throttle lock or CC, risers, etc.

Then you've got all the electronics--where the dollars can really start flying away. Comm systems, radar/lidar detectors and/or jammers, GPS, Sat radio, and on and on.

Finally, performance mods, like suspension, exhaust systems, etc. Who needs 'em? It's already hot, isn't it? Have fun.

When they were taking mine out of the crate had the dealer install, frame sliders, cruise and HyperLites. Since then I added a bigfoot on the kickstand, fenda extenda and sissy bar that's easy on and off. When the accountant gives you that look when she sees how much you spent you know you need to back off a bit,......and take her out to dinner on the new ride to smooth things over. :)

Congrats on the purchase...you've been bitten now!

Lots of good advice already, the best, get to know the bike first and then decide what you need to add / change.

Enjoy the new ride!! :)

I think I'll wait for the 2019 FJR. 6 cylinder smooth with auto or manual shift and a six speed transmission. I've heard they are going to postpone it until 2020 but I'm sure it's gonna be worth the wait. Seriously though-congrats. You got the best there is.

Thanks everybody. The Stealth Backrest looks great... and safety first is a must. I've already ordered reflective decals and I'm going to look around at lighting before I decide what to get there. I definitely want to be seen by everybody on the road. Those Hyperlites look like a great addition to the tale of the bike.

I really appreciate all the feedback and the congrats, everybody. I've found a lot of great information here and I'm sure I'll continue to do so! My new mistress, er- new bike, is a hottie for sure and I'm looking forward to a lot of time in the saddle!

Sweet !!!

I almost bought a 2012 but I like the silver so went with a 2011.

Where did you buy it ?

I'm in McCalla so if you and FJRbandit want to ride let me know.
Likewise. I have a weird schedule so weekends aren't always free but I'd definitely be up for a ride.

For got to answer this part, lol. I bought at Big #1 in Homewood (Birmingham, really, near Green Springs/Oxmoor Rd). I also considered the 2011 for the silver. My wife felt more strongly about the blue so I went with it. I like it more than I expected so it was a good move.

I was in there the other day.... wish I had been there to see a new owner pickin up the FJR !!!!!

It wasn't spectacular - I trailered it home, lol. I did ride a little again today though. I'm looking forward to riding longer than 15-20 minutes. That's on my agenda for Friday if I can swing it. :)

I'm actually 5'6" w/ 29" inseam. Sucks. LOL

I'll wait to see how I like the stock windshield. So far I've only had her up to about 45-50 on my local roads. Time will tell! The mirrors don't bother me but I am adding small convex mirrors. I drive with those on larger vehicles and really like being able to see more along my flanks.

I've ordered Grip Puppies and a Throttlemeister. I'll definitely need a throttle lock so I can restore circulation in my right hand, lol, though I hope the Grip Puppies help a little with that. I've also got some reflective decals and a tank protector on the way.

I'm going to do some research on bar risers, including more time in the saddle, and figure out whether I need them. We'll see. To that end (ha) we'll see how the seats feel in time. I'll likely do most of my riding solo and on different types of roads. My wife plans to go along - we'll see if she likes it. I hope she does because that will mean more/longer trips. So, of course, at some point I'll be looking closer at top cases, extra lighting, and a few electronic farkles... :p
I just got me a '05 yesterday. I'm the same height also. I am trying to decide between the throttlemeister or the breakaway. the salesman said the breakaway was good. the beak had a fall on the rightside all it needs is some touch up paint. I found a site last night to order the galaxy blue paint can/bottle/pen.

I'm not familiar with the breakaway but the Throttlemeister has been a life saver. The slab and main, open highways would be unbearable for me without it. My right hand would be numb but that's not the bike's fault, lol.

Woo Hoo, glad you got a New Blue!

I have had mine several weeks now & look for the slightest reason to run her out of the garage... I bought a set of rain gear just so I could do weather reports! (what the heck.. I live in Oregon... it rains here all the time.)

Enjoy your FJR.

Oregon, gotta love it, lol. I have friends there and fly to PDX for a visit every August. I'm already contemplating riding out there next year instead...

Earthrooster ~

Congrats on your beautiful new ride! I have an 06 and still love the color as much as the day I bought it!

I can't emphasize strongly enough: Stop whatever you are doing; install the frame sliders you bought. I noticed that your inseam is 29". Mine is 28 -29 myself, so I know whereof I speak: You WILL drop the bike! Don't want to sound like Donnie Downer, but with the little stubby legs we both have, there is absolutely no room for any sort of mis-calculation or error on our parts. A simple pebble under one of your shoes at a Stop line... foot slides out a bit, weight shifts the bike towards your now misplaced foot, and BAM your now in the world's most infuriating and embarrassing position - On your side with your bike happily resting on top of your leg. Unfortunately, nice after-market seats can make the problem worse, because you are anywhere from 1/2 to 1" taller in the saddle...

The actual damage to the bike will be minor if you have installed your new frame sliders... if not, it will be considerably more expensive. I only wish Yamaha had used a dark color primer under that beautiful Cobalt Blue... it would show the scratches from being laid down dropped a lot less!

I love this bike so much I'm willing to continue the tallish, heavy bike vs. short, stubby legs battle for a few more years. At the age of 70 though, I don't know how many more years I'll be able to pick it up (NOTE: I did not say "get it up" thankyouverymuch). When that happens maybe something like my son's Super Hawk with it's lower seat height and 150 lbs less weight. Who knows?

Actually, I hope you beat the odds and never put a scratch on your new mistress... it really does suck the first time.

Don

Don, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I won't drop her... but I installed the sliders before I did anything else! I keep debating with myself; buy tip over bars for the side cases, or put Gerauld on retainer for the future paint touch ups... lol

Like you, I love this bike. I'll deal with the slight teetering for time to time. :D

Congrats on you new bike I have a 2007 and got it used FJR is the best bike i have ever owned and i have had a few Ride safe :yahoo: :yahoo:
