Although I don't think it's particularly great form to post links to other bike forums on here, I have to make an exception on this...I came across a thread on Adventure Rider of the first Iron Butt Rally that I thought some of you would appreciate. Old school, baby!

Check out the photos ....nary a GPS in sight!

This a perfectly good reason to link. Thanks!

Very, very cool. Not much Cordura...
No textile riding gear either.
Actually, I think an ancient ancestor of Cordura was a textile called "Denim". It was usually blue or indigo in color and woven from natural cotton fibers. Looking close at the photos I think they're wearing examples of these ancient textiles woven by a famous weaver at the time called Levi Strauss. He was famous for his invention of the "button fly" and making women's butts look shapely at drinking saloons of the time.

I read that archaeologists have recently unearthed the remains of these garments with large holes in them...as they seemed to be no abrasive match for the pavement technology of the time. ;)

I love how the guy on the dual-sport is wearing denim and, from the looks of how little gear is packed on his bike, it just might be his only pants for the event!

I guess that's why it's important to learn from our predecessors. Also sort of reminds me of lyrics to a Kenny Rogers song: "Promise me son not to do the things I've done..." :p
