NEWS FLASH. With the date change for NAFO, it looks like I am going to be able to go! YAHOO! I am going to tentatively plan to make the trip out to Golden, CO., and if that falls through I will look at a trip around some part of the great lakes.

I will still have some time constraints that will mean making the trip out, and the return trip home in one day each, but that shouldn't be a big deal. As a matter a fact, I am thinking about trying to figure some kind of extended way from Rockford, IL. out to Golden, CO. to make it a 1500 Mile B.B Gold. See if I could do it in under 24 hours. I need to look at the speed limits in the states I would need to go through, and see which super slabs would be best.

I figure if I have to make the trip out in a single day, I mind as well get a certificate for it.

Below is a variation of a ride that I've been considering taking around Lake Superior. My personal plan is to take another day or two and visit Voyageurs National Park in northern Minnesota.
Day 1: 550-600 mile day on scenic route through Eastern Wisconsin and Michigan's Upper Peninsula to Sault St. Marie

Day 2: 550 mile day around northern shore of Lake Superior to Grand Portage, Minnesota (with a brief stop at Pukaskwa National Park)

Day 3: Take ferry and spend day at Isle Royale National Park. Return on ferry and ride 150 miles to Duluth, MN.

Day 4: 500-600 mile day on scenic route through Western Wisconsin and returning to Northern Illinois.

Total estimated mileage: 1700 - 1900

Here is a rough map of the route but note that it only reflects main roads and not my true plan.

As the freezing temps are here, it's fun to think of this!
This is kind of what I was thinking about doing, but down through the main body of MI, and then back into Northern IL. Defiantly a possibility.

Thanks Murph.
Screw the main body of MI, stick to the far left coast near the lake all the way up through Traverse City and across the bridge. The middle just sucks, it's as flat as flat gets.

Take that eastern part of that route and run it up the left side of MI and you're set. You will get rained on in the UP part of Michigan, there's some rule about that somewhere ;)

Trip around lakes = BORING. And then there are those moose things, that you can't see after dark.

Are you looking for the millage each day or the time in the saddle? 600 miles of supper slab may take you 10-12 hours, but 350 miles of back roads can take the same amount of time and be far more interesting.

The best roads I consider 1 day away from Chicago land are SW Wis (Madison to Minneapolis), SE Missouri (south of St. Louis), Southern IN (south of Indy), Eureka Springs AR, Ky south of Cincinnati down to Gainesville GA. I'm sure there's more but that's all I know.

Since I have the green light from the wife, NAFO sounds like the ticket for me. Can't wait for the F'ing weather to improve.

So, youa re going to NAFO? It is a last weekend of July, right?
I am planning on going to NAFO for now. I am looking at the possibility of doing a BBG1500 on the way out if I am short on time for the trip, or if there is going to be a group from the Midwest going out, I know my wife would be happier if I rode with some other people.

Arkansas

Who wants to ride on the flatlands of Colorado? All the best Colorado roads are a long day from Golden!!!!

Highways 92, 141, 149, and 65. I would never go to Colorado without a least riding two of those roads!

Oh almost forgot, Rain in the afternoons that time of the year......

You have my number, just call for other options....
