I'm in the planning stage of a cross country ride from NY to California.

Will be with a group of maybe 5 guys.

Were looking for info on shipping our bikes back to NY.

Any info or names of companies that do this would be appreciated.

Also if anybody has any recomended routes, i'd love to get feedback as well.

Thanks

When's the ride? What do you wanna see? What's your timeframe for the trip? Most of us can make recommendations, but we need some vague details.

Shipping? Lots of companies and probably one of us would contract to ride the bike from SD to NYC and fly home if you don't wanna palletize the FJR. Nothing like arriving in NY to find they busted your scoot and now you can't travel.

Obviously, budget falls into play here.

This one is recommended on Cycle Trader: https://www.motorcycleshippers.com/

I have not used them. I did ship my wife's bike once and the company had a specialized pallet that the strapped the bike to, so no prep was required. The company I used didn't guarantee a date, only a range of dates. They called the day before.

Sounds like a great adventure!

Weather needs to be a consideration at the end of May. Rain is likely on a northern route. Heat is likely on a southern route.

Let me see if I understand this. If you're leaving NY on 5/28 and flying home on 6/9, then you're going to ship bikes from SD to NY in early June. (I originally suspected the reverse.)

You will probably need to have the bikes at the shipper on 6/6 or fly late 6/9. This means your total trip, coast to coast will be effectively 10 to 13 days. If we figure googlemaps' 2804 miles, that's a pretty short haul each day.....less than 300 miles on a straight shot.

So, my suggestion would be to start in the NYC area. Head thru PA's Amish country, then southward toward the VA, WV, then the Blue Ridge mountains. Try to get "the Dragon" into the mix. Continue south....stay on the beach in Pensacola, FL (southern tip of Alabama).

Then visit the west..... I-10 and I-20 in Texas are the most boring roads on the planet, but once you get into AZ, the views can be fantastic. From there, it's a straight shot into SD.

But then, there are the other routes. Just remember, it gets boring across the middle of the country, wherever you decide to roam. North, central, south..... Kansas is a snoozer. The Dakotas are snoozers.

Ask your buddies if there's anything they especially wanna see. Yellowstone? California's Pacific Coast Hiway? Plan some of your trip around a goal or destination. If this is the epic trip, you should do what you want and see what you want.

Right now it looks like leaving NY area approx 5/28 & flying home 6/8 or 6/9.
super-slab, blacktop, specific towns/areas you'd like to see?

The riders in the mountains could confirm but be mindful of snow storm at higher elevations. May want to cruise the southern part of CO if you really want to go through that area.

We'll be leaving from NYC & traveling to California.

I like the idea of first seeing PA Amish & maybe doing some riding in WV.

Yellowstone sounds great & pacific coast hwy i think would be a must.

Prefer not to go too far south as for the heat. Bikes will be shipped back from CA, not SD.

Ok, really dumb question here... if you don't have time to ride back, why are you going so far?
