Plasti-Dip after one season

Iris used the 3M stuff, not plastidip. I think the 3M stuff results in a clearer smoother finish. Can't say for sure because, even though I have two cans of the stuff on my shelf, I've been too slovenly to wash the bike and apply it for protection. If I procrastinate too long it will be too late and then I can sell someone else my two cans of 3M stuff. ;)

Great idea.
With the red applied the little peels around the edges may not be noticeable..
Actually the little peels around the edges are from it being mounted. That edge is behind the lip of the fairing when installed and gets worn off as a result, but is unseen until taken apart.

El Toro Joe, I really value your opinion but it will drive me mad if I don't change it!

How come Iris' bags looked so good and yours is so noticible? Honestly, I was parked right next to her at EOM and didn't notice until she said something.
Brand or application technique has to be the answer. Personally, I think the black looked better, but that's just stupid to have to cover the paint to protect the paint. I think the best compromise would be the carbon fiber wrap. Good luck.
The 3M spray as I understand it, is supposed to be as clear as the vinyl wrap is, but "easier" to apply. I used the film with my own pattern, and although it took a lot of time to get all the bubbles out, I think the time spent would be about the same as if you had to mask off all the areas from over spray.

I am dam glad my bike doesn't have that POS soft paint. I don't have to worry about it, I just ride.

Good day,

Who's gonna be the first to paint one all flat black? That would look sweet.

I put 3M film on mine when i got it. The thought is to take it off when i go to sell and hopefully she will look better for resale. That's why you do it Zilla?

Plasti-dip has me thinking, buy a new bike and plasti-dip it right off, without taking all the body pieces off, which will make it easier to peel off when I'm ready to.

It all sounds a little like buying new furniture and leaving the plastic on it to protect the fabric! (I have seen that done.)
Yes it does. And I'll admit to having done that in (exactly) one case.

We bought a new kitchen table and chairs, and we had 3 young children at the time. Our youngest is now 28, so you know that this was a good long while ago. These chairs had some nice, beige colored, cloth upholstered seats, which, as you might envision, was a food stain nightmare in the making. Rather than constantly be on edge or yelling at the kids every time they spilled something (we probably did that anyway) I opted to buy some heavy gauge, clear vinyl and remove each seat cushion and wrap it in the vinyl, then reinstall them.

My plan worked very well.. We still have and use , those same vinyl wrapped seats daily today, 20 odd years later, and the cushions still look relatively good..

Sometimes an ounce of protection is worth a pound of cleaning.

I used the 3M clear spray on the V shaped bib and it came out looking just like what Bogus posted using the Plasti-Dip. I peeled it off and tried again. No luck. it still looked like ****. Removed it and applied CF film and it looks fantastic. I have a CF fender extender and the combo brings many positive comments. Used CF to wrap the lower tank band along with CF tank pad. Like Bogus, I take great pride on how my bike looks. I ride with pride!!

Back in Black......CF wrap. Finally! Was a bit tedious, especially around the pointy edges. Once installed though, those edges should be protected from fraying. Here is the link to e-bay where I got the wrap. Got the link from a forum member. Very cheap, but seems to be good quality. This is the same stuff I used for the "adjustable" panels on the sides.

A41Billy, Just google carbon fibre film and you will get plenty of buying sites.

Bogus, That looks super. I have had the CF wrap on my bib since the bike was new and it looks as good as the day it was applied. The fender extender really helps keep that area clean and free of road sh-t. As added protection, I used clear film on the edges of the fairings from the bottom to the turn signals. That area is susceptible to stone chips. Likewise, I covered the leading edge of the fender with clear after removing the Yamaha advertising. I see you removed those silly plastic labels on the side of the fairings. Clean and less crap to wax around!!

Because it's cold and ready to snow here in balmy Texas, thought I'd finally get around to trying the plasti-dip on the case side chrome badges. Not a lot of other chrome on the bike, not sure why they thought it would be a good idea here. Here's a shot with one done. Thinking as long as it doesn't get rubbed a lot should stay like this for a while. Applied at least 5 layers, comes off the paint around it really easily. Think it looks much better and black and an easy project.

Nice!!! Did you remove the chrome trim prior to applying the plasti-dip? If not, why? I'm thinking perhaps high temp flat black may be a good option. This is a concept that could become an idea!!

I did not remove the trim pieces first because they're glued on there really well and would probably destroy them or scratch something in the process. I taped off the Yamaha name and put some painters tape all around the chrome piece, about an inch out form all sides so that I could spray away and then just peel off the parts on the red paint and leave on the trim paint. I'll test it with this for a while and then maybe paint them later. I added a short write up and larger pics on my site under Mike's Mods tab.
