Worked fine since Christmas day but now refuses to read discs. Everything else working fine.

Can anyone throw any light on it?

Weird, it's been less than 30 days. Throw it back in the box, bring it to the store, and tell them to exchange it for a new one.

That isn't a common issue with PS3's.

Next problem, bought on ebay from Hong Kong. The UK Play Station helpline wont get involved but say that HK Play Station people will honour the guarantee. Trouble is they cannot offer a number for them. We have tried ringing the supplier but its 9.30pm there so will have to try tomorrow.

It has not been damaged at all.....vague possibility that it is worn out though!

That's what you get buying on ebay and having something shipped by itself half way across the world. =]

I know, I know, but its the one my lad wanted (80 gig) which we can't get here. Plus it was 2 thirds the price it would have been here. It was a risk and I told him that, as well as ''I told you so'' when we were worrying about getting it replaced. Now its getting resolved he will be saying it to me! They seem a big outfit and have been very quick to offer a replacement, so maybe we have done OK.

My son had bought a used PS2 for about $5 because of the same problem.....found there is a set screw on the drive that got too tight and the head couldn't slide back and forth. So might be an easy fix. I think he found a few more like that since the first one too, so it seems to have been a common problem for the PS2 so might be the same for the PS3.

If you open up the case and look at the CD drive you should see a long rod that the head rides on. On the head assembly there is a set screw to adjust how tight the head assembly is where it rides on that rod. Loosen that up a little bit and see if it helps.
