I posted this on another forum also:
Just finished troubleshooting a varying idle that sounded like "tut, tut" and "sput" every now and then. I noticed that the temp gauge was reading a bit higher than usual yet it ran perfectly fine off idle as far as I could tell. Some of you may already know what I found. The pic shows it quite well. Look at the sync port cap on cylinder 2. The cap to its left (cylinder 1) was just about to fall off also. The caps on cylinder 3 and 4 had cracks but at least they were on tight. I know this is not news to most here but I wanted to post the pic as I'd never seen one pop completely off. Maybe that's why the factory installs those little retainer clips on them.
Here's a close up of the worst caps. Not original I know, but OEM caps are $5 apiece. Next time I am in there I will replace my current Autozone caps with special high temp ones.
Almost forgot to mention, it purrs steady and even now.
