My brother has a Porsche Boxster which he uses occasionally. He came to it recently to find the battery flat. OK open the boot (trunk) and charge it....boot opens via an electronic servo....wont work, flat battery you see.

There is a lever which requires the removal of the inner front wing and wheel!!! The locking wheel nut socket is...you guessed it, with the spare wheel in the boot.

So he calls the AA (Automobile Association). They do a home start service for which he is covered. The guy turns up and connects his power cables to the relevant fuse inside the car and powers the servo to open the boot. ''Clever'' thinks my brother. The guy then proceeds to connect the jump leads to the wrong terminals and burns out the cars computer. Kerchung, £4200....$8400 at current rates.

The Porsche dealer will only deal with registered customers and therefore not with the AA. The AA said get it done, send the bill and we will pay you back. ''Don't f*****g think so'' says my brother. Imagining a 6 month exchange of letters to actually get the cheque. They are sending him the money in advance.

The leads are both black, but are clearly marked + and - so you take extra care don't you? You check 2 maybe 3 times that you have them right. The fact that one is only 6" long and visibly bolts to the body would be another give away.

Just sold my Porsche about a month ago, due to the fact that I could no longer afford to service it. it was a 1G car. Every time it went into the shop, it damn near cost 1G. Leave it to the Germans, they can OVER-Engineer anything.

I'm not positive about the Boxter, but ever other German car that I've seen which has the battery located other than in the engine compartment has a set of charging / jump-starting terminals in the engine compartment, and the engine compartment opens via a mechanical cable release.

Hi Graham. sorry to hear about your brother's dilemma. I've been dealing with AA here in the states for many years and they are pretty upright people. Maybe he could give them an estimate from the dealer and see what they say. Maybe they will just cut him a check to take to the dealership. It's a thought anyway. Good luck!
