Not sure if this is the right section, but just kickin around which would be a good/scenic route to WFO6 from northern Ca.? I've never done hwy 50, loneliest hwy, but heard it's worth the ride but not really sure which route to take. Been accross 80 many times but that's about it. Due to my physical limitations I will have to overnite on the way there and back about half way and also am considering doing a loop as in two differerent routes. I will probably be riding alone and have to consider the time of year with the heat and all and the critters out at night if driving at night. I know one thing, I have a feeling this is going to be special. Anyone have any suggestions to a good route? Thanks, PM. <>< :hyper:

It is hard to get across Nv. without some long periods of boredom, but you get to go really FAST. Southern Ut. has amazing roads so you could come up from the south and go north leaving. If you go north to Vernal and through the Flaming Gorge into Wy. before turning west you will avoid a lot of the boring roads but it is a bit out of your way. See you there.

I met a complete stranger at WFO-5. His first words to me were to ask how I'd gotten from Maryland to Nevada. His next words to me were, "I should kick your ass." Apparently, you're supposed to take Highway 50 whenever possible. Perhaps you can benefit more than I from this individual's penchant for handing out ass-kickings to strangers.

Rt 50 is nice, it aint' that lonely! However, there are places where you cell phone will not work...

I rode it from I-15 in Utah to Sacramento. The only problem I had was that a hiway patrol flashed his lights at me to slow down... (

Also, Rt 191 is really beautiful, but part of US50 runs along I-70. That would also be a good place to stop.

I've stayed both at motels along the way and KOA's...

Yes, its going to be special.

A route suggestions: Anything headed basically East until you have to adjust either North or South to arrive in Park City. J/K!

There are no "perfect routes" except for the one you're travelling. Make sure you have hydration and a cool-vest of some type, then let'er rip. And yur are absolutely right about making it a 2-day trip for yourself.

You might do a Yellow Pages search of the cities you'll be travelling through to see what's available.

I'll probably take 120 through Yosemite National Deer Sanctuary and hook into Hwy 6 through Nevada 'til it connects to 50, then 15 to the Provo/Orem area, onto the 189 up to 40 and into Park City, unless some locals can suggest a better way. I'll plug it into MapSource and see how it shakes out later. Only about 800 miles, so it'll be well short of an SS1K. I'm figuring about 15 hours. Unfortunately, no matter when I leave it's gonna be hot somewhere along the way.

Yea dude, Gimme a minute. I will PM Ya, No Wait, I will map it, post it here for going the "North South" Thingy in Utah. Been there done that... Be back in a few

OK I am back

Lemme see if I can upload PDF files to this thing. Justa sec, Oh fer hell sakes....... Lemme go put this on the web somewhere and I will be back again (sheesh)

Clicky

OK my GPS mapping software went a bit nuts on the written directions but here is the jist of it. There is a map, and written.

Just north of St Geworge git off on HWY 9 and head east to "Hurricane" Stay on 9 and hit ZIONS national park. Way worth the ride. You will land at the junction of 9 and 89. Go north on 89. Stay on 89 for a bit till you get to 12 (heads east again)

Take 12 to Torrey Utah. You will go past Bryce and many other way cool side trips. 12 is rated one of the top 10 roads in the nation for bikes. I have ridden it on my wing. I WILL!! be taking my new FJR there this year.

Then I show a meandering course north. The nice thing about this route is if you get tired or wanna pound out some miles you can at many places drop over to 15 and slab it north. This is a pretty long route but I wouild not miss the 12 for anything since you will be there anyway. Super sweet road. Twisty and smooth. Scenery is incredible. Plenty of gas and chow. Cooler than the slab cuz you are at altitude for much of it.

Anyway, thats my input as a local for what it is worth

I will help any way I can.

That looks like a killer route, but I only have one daylight period to get there, as I don't want to go through Yosemite National Deer Sanctuary in the dark. So, I'll leave at 0500 and hope to get to Park City by the time it gets dark, which, as I recall, is a bit earlier in UT than CA. My roommate likes to turn in early and I don't want to be a disturbance.

What I would like to know is if it would be more fun to lap Flaming Gorge or take a spool around the Dinosaur Diamond, providing I have a chance to ride a bit while I'm there. I'll probably have two days to get home, so the scenic route (through Zion and Bryce) might be more of a possibility at that time. The Skyway hydration unit will be getting a good workout.

As a native of Idaho, currently living in Sacramento, CA, I find it a little strange that one would think NV is any more boring than U.S. 95 from NV to Jordon Valley, etc ( and much of eastern OR).. At least NV lets you go 70-80 legally, while OR forces you to endure your pain at a snails pace, 55 mph. :) )

Thanks for those replies. There are some great roads and areas to check out. The only problem is which ones to check out because I would have to stay there awhile to see them all.......uhm......PM. <>< :yahoo:

Have not been to the Dinosoar Diamond. I do know (from looking at the map) that will be very very hot that time of year. I have been to many of the places you show on that route and can attest that your free time is better spent on the twisties by park city and poiunts north (like into the mtn between Park city (salt lake city) and Logan, UT, triangulate Evanston, WY as the third point. Spend your free time in that area and you will experience two wheel nirvana, just avoid the slab (the slab has some good areas too though). Flaming gourge is pretty, You would want to connect to it VIA Manilla (city in Utah) to be clower to the damm and what not. That takes you through OH OH OH Was just looking at the map.......

OK. You can leave Park City and take HWY 150 outta park city to francis, then out into gods high pine country Takes you past Mirror Lake. Comes into Evanston from the south.

The green squiggly line is hwy 150, this is just a part of that tasty lil whore. She starts 20 miles from park city too. Then the choices are pretty open.

Some of the routes I suggestes to Orange are running that area, some run south, some run all over the place. Mind you mine are just suggestions and I do not know what he has laid up. I will also be there and running wild of my own accord. I will be riding before and after the meet too if some folks are extending their stays. All are welcome to ride with me before and after too. This will be a main event in my year and I plan on treating it as such.

I will also go get "East Canyon". This one is sweet too and is #1, bar none, for sport bike riders here

Be back later for that one

OK East Canyon starts 10 miles from park city. This is a name yer poison road. You can be back in 2-3 hours or fo for broke and see ya tomarrow.

A taste

This is just a taste. Matters not where you turn once you are in it, it goes clear to the moon if you avoid the slab

Cdogman certainly provides some intersting roads and touring philosophies. In regards to Flaming Gorge (been there, stayed in a rustic cabin by an alpine lake overlooking the gorge): a loop around The Gorge is going to provide you with a ride in some desolate country -- north, on both sides. But, is actually quite pretty around the south end. So, Cdogman's Manila access recco is good advice. And, this choice is, imo, more easily do-able from Park City than The Diamond.

If you really want to do The Diamond, be advised that there's considerably more miles involved (if you're to & from Park City?). But, The Colorado National Mon. (Fruita CO) is not to be missed and U.S. 191 from Price north is a nice rural mountain ride. There's often quite a bit of traffic around, popular, Moab and U.S. 6 to Price gets pretty well used, too.

Of the two choices presented -- I'd choose The Gorge.

Got a chance to drive Rt 150 north from south Ogden to Evanston the beginning of June two years ago... We rode thru a friggin Blizzard!

Was pretty cool tho... very nice road, I'm glad Jim was driving cause he knew where he was going....

We also rode over Utah 191...I'm going back there....Utah has some awesome roads...

The only problem with riding thru Zion is that is takes a couple hours even without stopping... and they charge $20 a car...

Being on the official disabled list does have some advantages as I have a Golden Passport card that allows me to have free pass into all national parks in the U.S. Plus if anyone is with me in a car all can enter free or if on the bike, my bike and at least one other bike that is with me is in free also. PM. <>< :p

I see lots of talk about hwy50 here ....the loneliest hwy. It really is a treat IMO

Here is a little known excursion that will break up a bit of it and give you some wondeful scenery and some nice little mountain twisties. Once you do this you'll never miss it again and will tell all of your friends.

Just a bit past Middlegate (assuming heading east) take SR-2 (easy to miss so keep an eye out) just follow it and you'll go through/over the mountains, nice twisties and through a canyon, down a meadow and then drop back out into the vast NV landscape where you'll hit hwy 50 again just before Austin.

You can thank me by buying me a drink at WFO :)

I am a newbie with a 2007 and live in Rocklin and have a number of relatives in Park City. I haven't signed up yet but likely will as it sounds like a blast. I-80 is one boring highway but blessed with a 75 mile per hour speed limit. From experience I can tell you they do have cops in Nevada and no program to take an internet course to work your ticket off your record as some of the counties have about 20 residents (all highway patrol) and a p.o. box to mail your proceeds to. My pillion and I only have one day to get there. It is an hour later when you cross into Utah. I routinely do the run in 10 hours in the cage.

That's part of the beauty of riding across US50. There, you're more likely than not to get a Rural Speed (linked reference should show up at the top of the new page) ticket, which is NOT considered a moving violation. Unfortunately, this statute doesn't apply to the 75 MPH zones on the interstate, but does apply in 65 & 70 zone you'll find near Elko & Wells for example. I'm not sure about the 70 zone near Ferley. Depends on the county population there.
