About 8 weeks ago, I found myself at my Dr. office complaining about pain in upper left calf. The doc thought it could be a pulled muscle but sent me for a serum D-Dimer test to rule out serious clot. Result was slightly elevated but he did not pursue it because it resolved itself within a couple days. He warned me to get things checked IMMEDIATELY if there was a hint of recurrence.

Fast forward to NY Eve, I was at the hospital emergency dept with greater pain. The ER doctor didn't listen to history or anything else I told him and he decided (without blood tests or ultrasound) that the problem was sciatica. WTF?

Two days later at the insistence of my wife and daughter (who is a surgeon out west), I was back getting the right tests done and DVT diagnosis (deep vein thrombosis) confirmed. I am now on blood thinners and morphine for pain at home. Dr. isn't happy that progress on pain is non existant so I am headed back to the hospital for IV clot busters and observation.

This is a potentially dangerous condition and responds much faster and with far less risk if treated immediately. I could have been in major trouble if I hadn't gone back. Risk of stroke or pulmonary embolism which will ruin your whole day!

The reasons for the posting are twofold. First to serve as a reminder that motorcyclists are at risk for DVT. This is due to spending longer hours with legs relatively immobile in less-than-optimal position. Armored clothing may also reduce circulation. Dehydration can play a part as well. Long distance riders are at higher risk (for DVT) than bar hoppers. There is a lot to be said about the benefit of getting off the bike and dancing around for 5 minutes of every 90.

The other reason for posting is to remind everyone to PAY ATTENTION to what your body is telling you! I should have (and didn't) insist upon an ER doctor who would follow appropriate protocols instead of accomplishing his goal of pushing as many patients through ASAP.

Another downside to all of this is that I am likely to be on blood thinners for at least 6 months. Motorcycle riding is a riskier proposition if your blood wont clot!

Note: I am 60, in decent physical condition. Don't have high blood pressure or family history of cardiovascular illness.

Sport touring motorcycle riding isn't exercise.

Don't look for a magic pill. Git off yur butts and git yer blood flowin.

Just a 30 minute walk a day can do wonders.

:)

geesh, glad you stayed with it, Ross. We don't need any more peeps heading to pearly land..

I walk two to five miles 5x per week all year and do a 2+ hr workout at the gym at least 2x per week during the colder months. The excecise you need to prevent this condition is 5 minutes of solid activity to get pooled blood moving. Even if you are in fantastic shape, DVT can happen.

Thanks, Ross. The entire MC community - H-D and any other variety - is an aging demographic. We are fun seekers and risk takers but also should be risk mitigators when it comes to our health. Thanks for the reminder.

Standing up on the pegs is good too.People look at you funny, but whatever...

You can't be too healthy.

Thanks!
In Ontario the cops don't look at you funny. They consider that stunt riding, pull your drivers license, impound your bike, and leave you sitting on the side of the road while you ponder getting a $10,000 fine. I do it while they're not looking

.

From another site;

The penalties for stunt driving are;

  • An immediate seizure of the vehicle involved for 7 days
  • Immediate drivers licence suspension for 7 days
  • a fine between 2,000 and 10,000 dollars
  • possible drivers license suspension up to 2 years
  • 7 demerit points
  • Dramatic increase in insurance rates

Holy carp.

:(

John d - I was aware of the Ontario legislation on stunting. Could cost some lawyer time but I bet you could beat it. While i wouldn't flaunt peg standing on Ontario streets, I wouldn't let legislation stop me!

Regarding the OP's warning, I know another fellow who had this same issue come up after he went on an extended tour on his Harley.

He was layed up for 3 months on his return, and the blood thinners kept him off the bike for another month.

A bit scary; especially with the potentially dangerous mis-diagnosis by the first ER doc. I'm currently admitted to hospital and awaiting a bunch of tests and clot busting procedures. Will hopefully be home in a few days.

I do this often. A few deep knee bends is really refreshing because it gets the blood moving and the heart pumping.

Also a good call for highway pegs - get those legs out from the bent cocked back position....

I tend to stand up and bounce on the pegs from time to time, the woman has gotten quite used to this - as its the only way to get the creeks out and still keep rollin, or we're pullin over to take the walk and limber up, which is def something not to be avoided, but generally I'll save that for gas stops....

Stretching for us old feckers is very important - I have 2 bulging and 1 ruptured disc - so lots of stretching excercises for me or things go bad quickly... Another huge plus for the ES suspension !!! long journeys get the soft suspension for me, unless road conditions come on, just a button push away....

Drink more alcohol !!! everyone knows that will thin you blood.

That will be a $20.00 copay, Thank you,

Kidding aside, get well

Dave

Hope the treatment goes well.

I'm on Warfin for the rest of my life, 2 DVT's in the right leg, Crohns related sigh!

Have my own INR tester, well worth it, no more needles just a little pin prick.

Doesn't stop me riding, just have to stop and work the leg a bit ...... just in case.
