Just received a letter proclaiming me to be a powerball winner of $200,000.00 Received a check for $1985.00 which conveniently is the amount of fees to claim my price. Home office , London and branch office is British Columbia. The American office is in Las Vegas. To cash the check I must call a number in British Columbia to verify winnings. Canadian postmark and stamp.

Come on guys, do you think I really won? I can now but a new 1400GTR or a new FJR or a new R1 or whatever.

I have seen some people get really burned on these scams. You cash the check, then it does not clear the bank and you owe the bank the money. I have taken a few reports for the Sheriff Department that I work for. It would be great if this was true. I have personally recieved the same letter and thought this would be a great way to get the girlfriend a bike.

Don't know it works up in Canada, but down here the winning lottery numbers are all over the Internet. We would know if we won. Anything received in the mail, just out of the blue, is NO DOUBT a scam.

Was there a picture of this guy on the envelope?

If so, he make a great quote about the birth frequency of scavenger fish.

Well, for the cost of a phone call..... BUT as soon as they start asking "identity theft" questions, I'd end the call. If you deposit the money in the bank and don't draw it, if the check bounces are you still in trouble?

I did a quick Google for some of those keywords, and didn't see anything.. maybe I should throw 'scam' in there too....

*edit*

yep, looks like a scam to me.

I got almost the same exact message in an email at work a couple months ago. Funny that they would send that scam to an email address at the Oregon State Police - clearly not paying attention to where the emails get sent out to.

Do a little work on Google and you'll see all about the scam. That's where I found out more.

The check is "Noble Energy Inc. with an Ardmore, Oklahoma adress. i know its a scam as I bought no Powerball lottery tickets. Also a JP Morgan Chase Bank, Texas Controlled Disbursements. Wonder how you turn this over to authorities?

The Powerball Lottery is based in West Des Moines, Iowa.

In addition, unless you sent in a ticket that you thought was a winner, why are they contacting you? How would they know YOU won unless they received something from you in the first place?

The Powerball web site also lists this and other scams that are lottery related.

edit: I just saw that you see it's a scam. Turning it over to the authorities, well, finding an investigative body that will actually investigate something like that, good luck. I'd say since they are using the Powerball name, turn it over to them so they can pursue it.

Powerball would have required that you had bought a ticket somewhere where they had powerball. Winning numbers are pulled twice a week; Wednesday and Saturday nights. As a buyer of the tickey, you would have had to match the numbers pulled, and 'you', would have had to make the claim. In any event, if you ever 'really' win something, you should never pay a fee. I wouldn't even make the call, this reeks of scam.

Well to win you have to buy a powerball ticket and I suspect that you did not do that since I have a similar letter and never bought a ticket so how the hell could I win?

Die thread die!!!
We should all go out for cheese omelletes.
Mmmm... that sounds good this morning. I'm having a Jimmy Dean egg, cheese, and sausage croissant right now, but would definately prefer an omellete with some cheese and ham in it. :dribble:

Mr John William,
Easy Money! :yahoo:

Dr. Mensah just e-mailed me. He says a relative of mine died and left $18.5M in an account and I just need to contact him to get the money.

Hmmmm.

Nah, I'm going to eat a cheddar bagel instead.

Like MH said, it is not an official Canadian lottery. Suspicious.

No one gives out money for free. There is no such thing as a free lottery.

Like the old golden rule - If it seems to good to be true, it probably is.

A cheese bagel sounds nice.
