So I got a new set of PR2s on the skoot but I'm a little worried....to my eye it seems like the tread pattern faces the wrong way when the tire is mounted according to the directional arrows. As the tire rotates it seems like water would be moved toward the center of the tread and possibly reduce traction. Anyone have problems with the PR2s in the rain?

:clapping:

I just mounted it backwards and rode the Iron Butt Rally with it that way....or was it that I rode backwards?

These tires do just fine in the rain.

If you do a google search you will see a lot of people feel the same way and have the same question. I just got a set on my son's bike and that is the first thing I asked the installer, and came home and googled the same thing. PR 2s are suppose to be great in the rain and have very good reviews on traction in the rain. I rode the bike home and noticed right away that the bike handled better. The FJR gets a set this winter, not real happy with the Metzlers.

I have had many happy miles in the rain on PR2's and no drama to date. I agree with middlifeuturn - the Metzlers were crap, esp in the rain. Just MHO.

Really good rain tires mounted correctly -- don't sweat it. Not so good in the snow. (In case Big Cat is on the site.)

Figures that Ig would mount them backwards and still finish second (in a dry Lahontan Basin rally).

I have ridden in the rain with them and did not have any problems. I went out to Death Valley this year during the huge storms we had in SoCal (unlike that ****** bag kitty Reno John) and did not have any issues.

as the rear tire spins, the "middle of the tire points" of the treads go first, grab the water, and channel it in the grooves to the outside and away from the tire

btw, that's 15.2k miles on that worn one...admittedly mostly touring on the interstate

PR2's work like a champ in the rain. So long as you have enough tread depth to effectively pump the water from under the contact patch at speed, they'll surprise you with their level of grip.

The contact patch (CP) on the front for a properly inflated PR2 is about 13 in2. It is shaped like an ellipse instead of a rectangle as you would find on a typical car tire. Now, think about the bow of a rounded hull boat vs. a square hulled barge and how the boat would be better at moving water out of the way. It is the rounded x-sectional profile of the PR2 that puts the elliptical shape on the ground and that CP shape really does the lion's share of water-moving work. And it works like a champ.

Cheers,

W2
