Just got back from the hospital. I don't know where to post this, but here's what happened:

Bluestreek, MadMike2 and I went for a DS ride today in the Sierras. We couldn't get through where we intended, so we came back down the hill, intending to eat a late BYO lunch at the river on Iowa Hill Road. We got off I-80 at Rollins Lake Road (all paved) with me in the lead, Steve second and Mike behind. Maybe 3 miles of twisties on, we realized Mike was not behind us and went back. Less than a mile from where we had gotten off the freeway, he went wide on a gentle left hander (downhill) onto the shoulder. No one saw it, and he doesn't remember, but the marks look like he just got it back to the pavement and lowsided at that point. Fortunately, he was probably not going very fast.

But his selection of sites was not good. He tried to take out a 10 x 10 support for the end of a guardrail. That full face Shoei probably saved his life, and the CyclePort suit kept him from getting any road rash it seems. His KLR's top case is gone, the left pannier is destroyed, his windshield is toast and the tank has a dent in it, but it is amazing that it appears not to be too much more damaged than that. Mike is a little worse off.

Broken rib, broken clavicle, displaced left ulna at the wrist (but not broken), banged up his face pretty good (from the inside of the helmet). He was apparently unconscious at least for a moment, but was conscious and talking, though disoriented, from the time we got back to him and at the hospital, until the morphine started to have him coming and going. He has a neck brace on and is in pain, so they only let us see him for 5 minutes. It was serious enough that he got a helicopter ride to the hospital from whatever location the ambulance took him to so it could land.

If you have ever met Mike, you know he is one of the best people you're likely to meet on a motorcycle or anywhere else. He's a big guy, but those guardrail posts are just a bit too stout. I wish he'd waited another 100 feet to go down, so he could have slid across a turnout and come to rest on that kevlar suit with a view of Rollins Lake.

His new Cycleport pants are dirty but in good shape, but the EMTs cut his new Cycleport jacket off him. They commented a couple times about what a good thing it was that he was wearing the gear he was. Like I said, I have no doubt that he is still with us because he was wearing a full face helmet.

He's at Sutter Roseville Hospital for the night and probably a few more. He'll miss church tomorrow, but I'm sure he'd appreciate your prayers for a full and speedy recovery.

God bless you, Mike, may you mend completely and quickly.

Man, oh, man. It's getting really old reading about our forum brothers getting busted up left and right. Good for Mike wearing all the gear. Our prayers are with him. Let us know if there is anything we can do to help.

Bummer. Just had my own get-off the other day. Hope he heals quickly and glad it wasn't worse. My thoughts are with him.

Mike, Jeannette sends hugs and kisses -

And I would too, but hey, I'm a guy. So - heal up quick, ok?

It sucks that this happened. Sucks, Sucks, Sucks.

God Bless, Mike!

(And I've heard you can pinch the nurses as long as you're getting morphine - that's what they blame it on !! )

So sorry to hear of the news.

Heal up quickly Mike and many thoughts prayers and good wishes coming to you from Reno.

Man, I'm sorry to hear that. Only know Mike from his posts on here, always seems like a great guy. Here's to ya Mike heal up soon. I just came across I80 there on my way home around 9 am this morning. I've only been on this board for a short while but damn it seems like a lot of people gettin banged up.

Mike,

We were just PMing each other about the Cycleport gear- I really did not expect you to go and try it out! Get healthy soon.

Best Wishes,

Barry

WOW! Mike and I crossed paths several times at the WFO-6 Cycleport display and we ended up buying identical kevlar mesh suits (except mine is one size smaller than his). I am really sorry to hear that he crash tested his new suit but he will be the first to tell you that is the reason he bought it. I am surprised that he broke a rib and clavicle since that suit has very good chest and shoulder armor but without the armor Mike's injuries might have been much worse -- and even though you normally ride a DS at lower speeds, the ride height is much higher than FJR and if you go down on pavement you will be hitting the ground with a lot more force. I can't add anything to what Rich said about full face helmets, don't ride without one -- period.

Best Wishes and heal up quickly Mike, we need to keep riders like you on the road.

Oh, **** me! Rich, where's Sutter Roseville? I'll be up on Tuesday. This totally sucks. Mikey, bro, be strong and heal up!

Dang MM2,

Hope you heal thoroughly and quickly.

I thought the DS rides were so you could bounce off gravel and brush and the occasional sapling instead of the more unforgiving paved surfaces and related hazards. Between the severity of your injuries and the amount of time it took Uberkul to heal up after his dirt get-off, I'm thinking the world of dirt-bikes has changed a lot since my last gravel-induced pain...

Heal quickly Mike. Sorry to hear about this. You just never know what will cause this.

You are in our prayers.

Mike - dooode.. Your gear report was just fine.. you didn't need to really go and test it out, we believed you the first time..

Very sad to hear of your wreck. You'll be feeling this one for some time, so take some time to heal, and my best thoughts are headed your way.

May heaven continue to smile on you the way it did by protecting you today, Mike. Broken bones will mend with time and we're rooting for you all the way.
