Just got back from the hospital. I don't know where to post this, but here's what happened:
Bluestreek, MadMike2 and I went for a DS ride today in the Sierras. We couldn't get through where we intended, so we came back down the hill, intending to eat a late BYO lunch at the river on Iowa Hill Road. We got off I-80 at Rollins Lake Road (all paved) with me in the lead, Steve second and Mike behind. Maybe 3 miles of twisties on, we realized Mike was not behind us and went back. Less than a mile from where we had gotten off the freeway, he went wide on a gentle left hander (downhill) onto the shoulder. No one saw it, and he doesn't remember, but the marks look like he just got it back to the pavement and lowsided at that point. Fortunately, he was probably not going very fast.
But his selection of sites was not good. He tried to take out a 10 x 10 support for the end of a guardrail. That full face Shoei probably saved his life, and the CyclePort suit kept him from getting any road rash it seems. His KLR's top case is gone, the left pannier is destroyed, his windshield is toast and the tank has a dent in it, but it is amazing that it appears not to be too much more damaged than that. Mike is a little worse off.
Broken rib, broken clavicle, displaced left ulna at the wrist (but not broken), banged up his face pretty good (from the inside of the helmet). He was apparently unconscious at least for a moment, but was conscious and talking, though disoriented, from the time we got back to him and at the hospital, until the morphine started to have him coming and going. He has a neck brace on and is in pain, so they only let us see him for 5 minutes. It was serious enough that he got a helicopter ride to the hospital from whatever location the ambulance took him to so it could land.
If you have ever met Mike, you know he is one of the best people you're likely to meet on a motorcycle or anywhere else. He's a big guy, but those guardrail posts are just a bit too stout. I wish he'd waited another 100 feet to go down, so he could have slid across a turnout and come to rest on that kevlar suit with a view of Rollins Lake.
His new Cycleport pants are dirty but in good shape, but the EMTs cut his new Cycleport jacket off him. They commented a couple times about what a good thing it was that he was wearing the gear he was. Like I said, I have no doubt that he is still with us because he was wearing a full face helmet.
He's at Sutter Roseville Hospital for the night and probably a few more. He'll miss church tomorrow, but I'm sure he'd appreciate your prayers for a full and speedy recovery.
God bless you, Mike, may you mend completely and quickly.
