Thinking about the life of my 05 FJR, it spent the first 30,000 miles in the desert. We've been through everything from dust storms to frog choking rain. I've never had the fuel filler cap off, but do recall early posts in 2004/2005 regarding cutting the drain hose at the correct angle. With an optimistic attitude, off I went to be come more intimate with the bike....

Lookie here... little dust/dirt, but the rust with flaking paint was a bit concerning. So, I plugged the screw and drain holes and hunted around the garage for what may work to protect this area....

I sanded out the old rust and quite a bit of the paint, masked the area off and draped the bike with a couple of old sheets, and went to work with a can of truck bed liner. If you do this, be sure to not get it too thick. The can of material that I had did not include any information about whether it is fuel resistant or not, so do this at your own risk. I wonder if the rusting is more focused on the rear left side because the bike spends the vast majority of it's parked time on the side stand, allowing any water to sit on the left rearward portion of this depression in the tank. Hmmm....

I wonder if it will affect any overflow fuel that comes our of the tank and is meant to find its way to the recessed drain hole (and down the drain hose). Based on Fred's write up, it seems like the recessed hole is meant to act like a sump hole and the gas just gavity feeds around until it finds the "dimple".
