Now that the rally season is over with and I don't have any long rides planned for a while I stripped off the various growths on my FJR including the fuel cell, Pelican case, and even dashboard goodies. While I was at it I removed the side bags and rode to work today.

The problem is that the acceleration scared the shit out of me and the front wheel wanted to lift off the ground.

Stunned, I let go of the throttle and the compression braking also scared me.

I guess that's a good problem to have..... :D

I don't have the time on the bike that you have, but I have gotten to know it pretty well. At the start of the gerlach bonus hunt - I took off all the bags - leaving only the tank bag stuff on the bike. The suspension startled the hell out of me -one of the reasons I screwed the pooch in the rally was that when I hit the train tracks right outside Gerlach - my rally towel (piece of paper) went flying out of my tank bag due to my being somewhat airborne at the time. Quite a bit of difference in the taughtness of the suspension without all the bags, tools, etc.

If I were you, I would have picked a little traveled road around Pyramid and beat the snot out of it with that hand cannon of Austin's. If it didn't settle down I then would have shot it in Nixon and left it for dead. You gotta show 'em who's boss when they're new and break 'em.

the way I shot that S&W500 - the only thing safe WOULD have been my bike and anyone standing near it (assuming that is what I was ostensibly aiming at).

I'm a good shot (though not so much with a pistol... but I still have my expert badges) I only put one on the paper.

shit man - you had a 10 point deduction - I had a 15.

Of course - I lost my rally flag with I think DQ'd me. IF it didn't then telling Austin that I turned off the GPS "job 1" when I missed the most direct route - and turned it back on when I recovered (I underestimated by .5 miles).

So - I pretty much knew I was toast as soon as I looked down not even 1 mile out of town due to losing the "rally flag".

Had a great time anyway.

I'm pretty sure Jeff Fisher is now lusting for an FJR after following me from Reno. We came in from the Pyramid road side - instead of 80 - about 100 mile total. I'm pretty sure that was his fastest time.

I thought we were gonna talk about acceleration. :( How'd this morph into a long-distance thread? You guys are so clickish... :)

I've only been riding the FJR for a few months, and I've had to get used to the acceleration, as in, "You can get in over your head a lot quicker." The rapid engine braking helps out in that area, as do the mondo brakes. I was doing Grizzly Peak last weekend, following a BMW. Coming up on a slow-moving car (is there any other kind?) on a short-but-straight patch of road, the Beemer cleared the car easily. I blasted on the throttle and did the same. It was that rapidly approaching right-hander that got my pulse quickening. But man, you just grab a handful of brake and squeeze it down progressivley faster (over the period of about 3 seconds), and Man! that baby slows down. Drop it a couple of gears, and flick it into the turn at a safe speed. :yahoo:

I love this bike!
