I am from Greece and i have 2002 model. the summer in Greece is hot and i wonder if i have problem with the bike temperature. when i travel the temperature is on 3 marks (display) but when i am stuck at a traffic jam the bike temp is always on 4 marks and for a few sec goes to 5 marks. is this normal?

And something else. The fan should blow air TO the fridge or it should suck air FROM the fridge?

Yassou Tikanis

The fan should blow the air to the radiator.

My readout is normally 3, but goes to 4 in traffic.

kala eimai. euharisto. esi pos eisai?

My fun sucks air from the radiator. probably the wires are wrong installed. i shall try put it correct and i will tell you.

tnx man.

Welcome. :clapping:

Sorry about your fan issue...first time I've heard of an FJR with that one.

edit: oh yeah...I love gyros. :yahoo: :D :D

olla enia kala - apo pou ise?

My gf is from Thessaloniki

No, no, no, your fan is correct. When the fan turns on the airflow is from the front of the radiator to the rear of radiator; like you said, it should suck air through the radiator.

ok... entirely possible I just f'd up... I'm sorry if I did.

yes... the idea is that the fan pulls fresh air through the radiator.

(in fact, didn't the Goldwing have this issue originally? Where they reversed the fan in slow traffic and they were symptomatically overheating?)

The fluctuation in temperature readings is quite normal and, as you've discovered, is dependent on a variety of factors, including road speed (or lack thereof), air temperature, and engine load. On really hot day while stuck in stop and go traffic, mine will sometimes go up to 6 bars.

I've seen 10 bars on a really hot day. Forced myself to only have one drink in each one though.

Seriously though, I've seen the gauge rise to 6 bars on a really hot day while stuck in traffic, but it returns to normal pretty quick when I start moving again.

Yes.

For Generation I bikes that have 6 segments of display on the temperature gauge and the conversions here........anything below 230 or 240 degrees F is fine. So the few seconds touching 5 bars indicates you're getting up towards, but not past that amount.

You have Gen II FJR which I believe has a total of 8 bars for the temperature gauge?

Us Gen I owners, like the original poster only have a maximum of 6 bars for the temperature gauge. Before this past weekend I had never seen over 4 bars which is pretty typical of a Gen I FJR. When the temp gets to the 4th bar, the fan comes on and in a short while it goes back down to 3 bars, and the fan cuts off. Now for the original poster, I am not saying something is wrong, but it sounds abnormal to me to get to the 5th bar. I live in one of the hottest places in the U.S. and like I said have never seen 5 bars. Until..........

This weekend my fan stopped working. And on about 4 separate occasions while stopped with the engine idling, my temp gauge went to the maximum 6th bar and started blinking. Which I believe meant my FJR was about to blow up. Fortunately, as soon as I started moving, the natural air flow through the radiator cooled things down rather quickly. One time however, it pinged like an SOB as I got going. Not enough throttle/RPMs for it's overheated liking me thinks. And this was in cooler climates while traveling. Now back in Phoenix, I need to get that fixed ASAP, but it's just one of several electrical problems I am experiencing. Something is very wrong right now. Just hope I can find it easily.

Yo Iggy. Your chart doesn't differentiate the difference between the 6th bar, and a blinking 6th bar. I THINK I saw both of those conditions. Or perhaps the 6th bar always blinks. New stuff to me, I'll have to find out.

Also, as already clarified, the fan, located behind the radiator, pulls or 'sucks' the air through the radiator in a 'front to rear' direction. When working, is very effective.

Have you visited ponyfool's I've yanked my engine' thread?

What pins?
[guess] Pins in connectors located in main signal connectors that reside in the vicinity of the middle Tee Bar bolt hole. As you dig down between the cylinder head cover and the frame you will see the connectors. Some people have found the pins that carry higher currents through these connectors have started to corrode. By cleaning these pins and packing with dielectric grease mysterious electrical gremlins were cured.[/guess]

checkswrecks is an advocate of dielectric grease for preventative maintenance.

HI madevil21:

In the month I have had my 07 FJRA, normal operation is 4 bars; 5 bars if working the engine a bit; and 6 bars in traffic at stoplights. Then, back to 4 bars once moving or "normal" riding. I live in Central CA which is a Mediterranean climate like yours.

The feejer will be OK and won't let you down!

Once again, you have a Gen II model which has a different amount of 'bars' than than madevil21's Gen I FJR. So your observations and experiences don't do him any good.

i have 6 bars. i the last 3 days i think my fjr works fine. 3 bars always- 4 bars traffic. what the f**k happened? fixed by itself??? maybe the .... <_< was stuck (i dont know the english word. the thing that lets the water to go to the radiator. in greek is "thermostatis") . anyway, i will be watching the temp issue.

another question. do i have 1 fan or 2 fans? can i put a bigger fan on my bike? or maybe put a second fan?

The English word is "thermostat".

You own a Gen I bike (Euro 2001-2005). That generation of FJR has 1 radiator fan. The Gen II bikes (2006-present) have a different radiator (curved) with 2 fans. You might be able to redesign the fan system.......but its not likely the Gen II fan system will swap out to your bike.
