Dear Forum,

I put new AVON tires on bike removing rear wheel myself (have done this several times) - BUT something now is wrong. When I put on my rear brake there is a "clunk" somewhere in rear of bike - rear wheel acts like the ABS is trying to work, then releases, tries to work, then releases. I am testing on dry pavement although rear acts like I am in loose gravel or something. It happens when I press down hard on rear brake (if I just lightly touch it the brake feels normal).

Has anyone experienced this? My "guess" is that the ABS rear sensor has gone bad - (yep, I have the alignment right following the ABS rear wheel Installing and Removal off the FJR Tech page.) I always do my own work but this may require a trip to Yamaha dealer (50 miles away). I trust this forum more than I trust the local Yamaha shop. Bike is an 05 FJR with 12,000 miles on it and I have had the rear wheel off several times with no problem up until this.

Did you check the torque on all of the bolts on the brakes/brake torque arm? Maybe something is loose and allowing the brakes to rotate slightly? Did you check your brake pads to make sure they're ok?

Is the ABS light coming on? If the ABS system is engaging the light will come on.

The "clunk" might suggest something mechanical in nature, versus a failed sensor.

Are you absolutely certain you have the wheel re-installed correctly... spacer ring located outboard of the caliper flange, all torque values double-checked, proper sensor ring placement, etc, etc?

It's worth checking again. Even a third time.

And do look closely at both ends of the brake arm... all good there? Fasteners on both ends torqued correctly?

If everything appears correct, I would remove the wheel and re-install it.

Ok - I am heading back to garage to re-check - the ABS light does not come on.

I have disassembled and re-assembled again with same results, but I am going to try a third time - I will report back with results......

Thanks to all for the help - I am leaving Saturday headed to Barber Museum in Birmingham, Alabama with the local BMW club and I want my FJR as good as it can be

Hope you still have the wheel off. Stick your finger in the axle hole on the rim and rotate the bearings. A bearing failure back there will give you lots of noises traversing the entire driveline. If they are smooth when you turn them they probably okay. If they are rough at all, its time to replace.

Remember the ABS cover needs to be aliegned correctly. There is a tab that needs to fit in a slot. Make sure you get this reight. The sound may be the cover turning and hitting this tab.

He stated he checked the tab alignment several times. And a bearing might have failed, but that would be damn peculiar timing. 99 times out of 100, if all was fine before disassembly, and now isn't, something went awry on reassembly. Remove everything, every last nut and bolt that was removed on the original job, and reassemble carefully, preferably with a manual showing the exploded view of all the parts involved. You'll find it, guaranteed. ;)

Thanks Radman, and everyone - I have the shop manual and I have printed off the instructions from FJR Tech - got dark on me so I will dis-assemble again tomorrow - piece by piece -

Eddie

Removed my post............didn't make sense........
