I screwed up on the topic, I'm not asking myself the question, this is addressed to you all but I can't seem to figure out how to edit the topic, anyway....

What average rpm's do you run in, before you shift, around town, in cruise, etc?

I am at my 600 miles, so I will be running rpms over 4000, I think it I'm not supposed to go over 5500 for the next 400 miles then it is go for broke. But I was wondering about how high up on the rpm scale most go before they shift, as they just are running down the road (not racing or showing off). My instant mileage according to the bike is awesome when I cruise around 3100 rpm. I'm not used to a sport bike so running at high whining rpm's is kinda strange to me (I have only had cruisers except for the 8 months I owned a goldwing).

3-3500. I always short shift unless conditions warrant a different pattern. Motor has a Ton-O-Torque®, I use it. Oh, and do not concern yourself with higher rpm's, what can hurt the break-in is constant speed for more than 10 minutes, like steady state freeway cruising. Vary, vary, vary. You wanna rev more during break-in, avoid lugging like the plague, do not allow the motor to get under 2500 or so while under way, the higher you go in the gear range, the more the r's should be up. For instance, never under 2500 in first or second, 3000 in third, 3500 in 4th or 5th. Once well broken in, past 5000 miles, the engine will pull fromm 1500 with a PCIII with no issues whatsoever.

Sounds like a broken record, rad. Can this result in the dreaded "ticking"?

Maybe do a search for Breakin tips? Most cruisers being twins have higher/broader torque and low rpms. If you have it, use it.

I shift as low as 3,500 RPM when cruising around in relaxed mode on flat ground. If you're going to crank it wide open, try to shift by redline (it comes up awful quick in the lower gears). The rev limiter wil put a damper on your fun on the high side of 10 K.

I was cruising in 4th and 5th around 3100-4000 rpm. Broke the 600 mile mark and was revving higher before shifting (5000-5500) and cruising in the 4s. The bike seems to like the higher revs.
