Hey all,

I was chewing on the idea of doing a loop SS1k run. Would you give your feedback/tips?

I was thinking going from San Diego to Flagstaff, rest as needed, then on to Las Vegas and then back down 15 to San Diego. Google maps routing: 1071 miles. I know from having driven to Vegas and back that that stretch of 15 is a turbo-speed corridor, so I was thinking it would make a good homestretch run.

Concerns: are gas stations open late along that 15 corridor? Timing could be an issue with fuel stops being sparse if they aren't 24/7 places.

Since I'm realtively new to the SW region, would either direction (clockwise/Vegas first or CCW/Flagstaff first) make any difference in terms of temps and comfort if I'm starting early in the morning from SD?

Any and all feedback is welcome and greatly appreciated.

Depending on what time of day you're crossing the Hoover Dam, you could be in for a wait. I think the longest I've waited to cross was about 45 minutes to an hour. It sucks because your basically in stop and go traffic in a high wind area. I don't recall if the gas stations on your route back to San Diego from Las Vegas are open 24 hours or not though. The last time I took part of this route I was running a fuel cell, so I only had to worry about stops every 350-400 miles. I would wager to guess that you'll be fine though. Interstates gas stations seem to be pretty good about being open 24 hours.

Another much more boring route option would be to go from San Diego to Tucson, then to Phoenix, then to LA, and back down to San Diego. Mapquest has this at 1020 miles, which is cutting it a bit close, but it does have gas 24 hours. This really is a very boring route though, and it wouldn't be my first option.
