My 12 and 10 year old boys have finally killed our PS2. Actually, I contributed to it's death, not by playing it, but by accidentally stepping on it in the middle of the night. Now, it doesn't recognize any disc put into it, game or DVD.

So, in considering the replacement, we are looking at the available systems. The PS3 looks nice, but holy cow is it expensive. Plus side is, it has a Blu-Ray DVD player built in and it appears to be backwards compatible with the PS2. But, maybe it's time for a change.

Anyone have experience with the newer game systems?

I did try a search, but the results were a year old, nothing newer.

The only one of those I haven't played yet is the PS3. I have heard mixed reviews about it. Some say it's great and others say it's kinda so-so. Graphically, I don't the Xbox 360 can be beat. But the Wii is awfully fun and can be a serious workout! Especially for those of us whom are a bit on the " festively plump & out of shape " category. I have considered buying a Wii and just might. But I do like the fact that on the other systems you can play all of the previous gen games on the new console. If I could play the PS3, I'd be able to make a better decision.

My kids have Xbox 360. We had the regular Xbox and when it choked we bought the 360 because then they could still play all of the regular xbox games. Yeah right! Out of 15-18 games I think that 2 of them would play on the 360. Not sure about the PS2/PS3 compatibility but would be worth looking into before you make a purchase.

My vote for your next system: Let the kids decide! One thing about our kids having the 360 is it's the same unit that thier friends have so they can share games.

Good luck

Sony have released a 'budget' PS3 in Australia. Smaller HD, not backwards compatible, and (IIRC) no USB capability.

Our son has the Sexbox 360 at home, I scored the PS2 for me on the minesite. PS2 is chipped...so I have a library and a half of DVD's/CD's. I'm happy.

The XBOX360 is proving most popular with the "Rear Seat Counter Weight" and I doubt that he would go back to the PS2. He has tried the PS3, but his investigations suggest that the 360 is head and shoulders above the Sony.

The Wii is fun, great for partys etc...but doubt that it would hold my interest in a solo "fight 'em up" session.

Xbox for the win.

According to my 2 sons (ages 14 and 13), the XBox 360 is the the shit (they each have one). I'm not a gamer and only watch them play on occasion, but I do have to admit that the games and XBox Live (Microsofts online gaming environment) are incredible.

I'm not a big-time gamer, but I love the Gran Tourismo series, and now Tourist Trophy from the same people. Distributed by Sony, so it's only for their console. Being such a narrow-minded stubborn prick, I'd stay with the PS3.

If hi-def DVD capability is important, PS3 has Blu-ray built in, the Xbox360 HD DVD is an add-on, and I don't think HD-DVD is gonna survive.

Actually, with LG announcing they are going to make a 3 way DVD player that will play traditional, Blu-Ray AND HD-DVD, I'm thinking this isn't going to be the VHS-Beta war like before. I think since both have widespread support, both will last for a while and companies will just start making multi-format players the way LG decided to. Kinda like + and - R DVD formats. Most just do everything now.

The Blu-Ray is a bonus considering my very near purchase of a 1080p HD projector for my new theater room. But, the budget PS3 is NOT in the cards because I want to be able to have backwards compatibility.

I'm not that interested in X-Box live for my pre-teen kids because I don't like them doing on line stuff without supervision. I've just been a cop too long I guess.

The Wii is the BOMB. I love how it makes you move and it is just damn fun.

It is my first choice when playing. My arm is still a little sore from playing tennis

with my husband and kids. I bought my husband an xbox 360 elite (or something)

for his birthday with an HD player. We have been arguing since the PS3

announced over which one to get. I even had a PS3 preordered when they were first

released, but gave it up when I saw the Wii. The 360 is ok. The sport games are better than the PS3.

But for a true new gaming experience the Wii is the winner. It is best to have space to play though,

cuz you don't just sit there and zombie out.

it's either the 360 or the ps3.

The Wii doesn't have very many good games at all.

I have ps3, but I got is partially for the blue ray player since I have a high-def television. PS3 is coming out with a shit-ton of games between now and January. Some of them are rumored to be really good.

Assassin's creed

Gran Turismo

Cliver Barker's Jericho

Ratchet and Clank

Devil May Cry 4

Resistance Fall of man is freeking great!

Warhawk is fun and addicting.

Xbox 360 has a larger selection of games.

It also has Halo 3 and BIOSHOCK (game of the year).

You can get an hddvd converter for xbox 360 but it costs extra.

Xbox live is a better online system than playstation network.

I'd go with the PS3 simply because of the ability to run at 1080p, the xbox 360 will only do 720p. The PS3 is also backwards compatible and will run all the ps2 games. Right now (due to all the games coming out in the nxt few months) Xbox has more selection of games.

XBOX 360 HD DVD player hooked up via VGA video cable = 1080p :)

XBOX 1080p search

I can't quote you any games that may be out yet that are written for 1080p (if any) but the XBOX 360 will do more than 720p.

In the end, the decision comes down to:

-How much is in your budget?

-What games do you have to play? (i.e. Halo=XBOX, Gotham Project Racing=XBOX, Gran Turismo=PS3, etc...)

If you are not 100% set on having to play a certain title, "most" of the games are cross-platform.

Best answer so far sounds like "let the kids decide" unless the PS3 is outside the budget.

They will be happiest playing the system their friends have.

Our daughter and her husband have pretty much every video game system every made, and then some. (When they moved into their apartment, the TV and one game system was hooked up before they got a stove or a fridge).

Current favorite at their house is the Wii. They brought it to our house when we had guests and it was the hit of the party. Everyone who got a turn got a workout (including a forum member, who pulled a muscle in his back).

I did not know it was capable of 1080p for games. However, I would guess that given the 360 has less actual processing power, the framerates would be unbearable in 1080p. Which is probably why all the games up to date have been in 720p. Many of the PS3 games are also only in 720p, but more are coming out that will be able to do 1080p.

Hey buddy, since I've been home recovering from my surgery, I've lived on the 360. I bought a one-month subscription to X-box Live because playing alone was lame. It's not too bad - about the worst it gets is language, but I agree, you might not want to expose the kids to that.

I'm sold on the 360, but I'm not much of a gamer, either. I have not seen or experienced the Wii. I've heard it's good, but limited in number of games and online play.

All the systems are probably great. In the end, it comes down to the TV if you ask me. Go big.

If you have PS2 games that you want to be able to play the PS3 is pretty good at playing them now. In fact I haven't found a game yet that doesn't play acceptably.

On the other hand PS2's are dirt friggin cheap, you can always pick up another.

I like that the Wii is more engaging, ie: not sitting on your butt the entire time. So I may end up getting one of them AND a replacement PS2.

From all the advice I have gotten from friends at work, etc, the Wii is more child oriented, the X-Box is more carnage oriented, and the PS3 is more wallet oriented. Is this about right????

I'd say that's mostly right... But the price of the PS3 is dropping and bringing it more into line with expectations.

The Wii is fun, no doubt about that, but it's attraction has warn off for most of the folks that I know that have them.

You can only play soo much Wii Tennis, etc, and there just aren't any decent games. I suspect we'll get one this Xmas though.

- XBox scares me only because I'd get so addicted to Halo that I'd never be seen again.

All the 'children' that I've talked to about the Wii are over 20, some over 30 and some older than that. The word is that nursing homes are using the device to keep residents active. But you didn't want to hear THAT did you?

Our son's birthday was 6th October. When he finished work that day (6:00pm) he was given his birthday present - Halo 3 "Collectors Edition".

By Monday evening (8th October), he had completed the game, albeit, it was not on the most difficult style. It took me over 3 months to complete the original Halo on the PC (after work, early hours of the morning etc)

The car simulation games on the 360 have certainly had me hooked (viz. steering wheel, surround sound system) :yahoo: ...much to my wife's disgust.
