I retired March 1st and bought the FJR March 2nd. My problem is that I don't really care to ride alone that much, and all my riding buddies are younger than me and still work.
Funny, I've gone the opposite. I used to live for group rides and going out with my buddies. The last few group rides, and even a ride with one other person, I've been nowhere near as happy as I am out on my own. Something about being free to just go, and do it your own way, stop when you want to, ride the pace you want to.

I also assume that now that I have a wife and kid, that could affect my ability to enjoy having a little alone time.

Yeah. it's odd. I used to love to ride alone. Now, I love to follow or lead a friend. I've got three guys that I ride with locally, we ride similar paces, and I trust them completely not to do anything that'd get me hurt. I've ridden with some people I just don't want to ride with again.

Funny, though. I'm planning a 6000-mile tour next year alone, and I'm thinking about how nice it'll be to go where I want when I want without having to consult anyone else.

I am lucky that lately I have been riding with guys that are easy going and like to ride the way I ride, go places that I am going, and provide entertainment for me when we stop for dinner or out in the parking lot.

I rode the first three years on the FJR, and the previous years on bikes pretty much alone. I like the cameraderie.

However, on longer two week trips or so, sometimes you need some alone/apart time...usually a day is enough to get that alone time to get you recharged for the rest of the trip.

...From the north end, Hwy 5 south is pretty good. Then you can take 56 east over to 9 and south into Melbourne. Then that section of 9 to Mountain View is a hoot!
Yep, that is quite a hoot...then 16 from Mtn View to wherever you wanna go next.

Can't wait till the next Hooterville ride!
I see what you did there -- quite a hoot -- Hooterville. Clever ;)

I can't wait either. The group I rode with Friday and Sunday was the kind of group I like to ride with -- fast but not stupid. There are some skills in that group. I'd loved to have stayed with you for the whole ride Sunday, but I had 525 miles or so by the time I got home as it was. And only about 60 miles of that was Interstate. I also discovered when I got home that my rear tire was pretty much shot. That's weird. I started the weekend with 7500 miles on that tire and still had 4/32" of tread. 1000 miles later it was gone. What's the deal with that?

Well, I'm not exactly sure, but I'm willing to spend more time and $$ to find out! :)

Of that 7500, about 6000 was touring (Utah, Kentucky, etc.) and the rest was riding with a Goldwing buddy at a Goldwing pace. I know what the deal is, but -- I'm also willing to spend more time and $$ to prove it.

Precisely why that when I head out to ride the FJR most times and the S.O. asks me who I am going with I reply "Nobody but me".

A good and compatible riding buddy is a joy to have around..

I left all mine back in Houston last years. Fortunately a couple of them have been up to Arkansas to ride with me.
