My CFR ride report, such as it was
Mike arrived at my place around 8pm. I cooked us some steaks on the BBQ and we watched Game 7 of the Stanley Cup. That night, once again, very little sleep. Maybe 4hrs tops. The last 3 weeks or so I haven't been sleeping. I figured as soon as we actually got underway, I'd sleep. We got on the road by 8. First thing I notice is that routes are not on my GPS. A few days before we made a change and I guess I forgot to re-upload the routes to it. The first stop was Blind River, about 2 hrs outside of Sudbury. I got a text msg from a buddy at work saying the Tracker wasn't working. I shut it off, start it back up, and hold the 'Check In' button for 5 seconds. Their isn't an indicator other than the blinking Check-in light to tell you it's in tracking mode.
We rode into Sault Ste. Marie, and we took the time to hook up my netbook to upload the routes to the GPS in the Tim Hortons parking lot lol! Sault Ste. Marie was a bit of a dogs breakfast. Their doing massive road construction with most of the major roads closed. The rest of the roads are all one way streets. The GPS doesn't know about the road closures. Their are signs everywhere pointing the way to the border. All of these point to roads which are closed. The rest are one-way going the wrong way! We eventually make it to the border crossing after wasting a good half hour finding the damn thing. Another 35 or 40 minutes at the border itself.
We stopped somewhere in Michigan for gas. Mike stuffs his mouth full of beef jerky. I've never had it before so I snag a couple of pieces. Here's Mike with a mouthful trying to keep his mouth closed while holding back a laugh:
I spend the next hour or so sucking beef jerky out of my teeth while we ride on. To the west through Michigan, was some pretty ominous dark clouds, to the east over Lake Michigan, bright sun. We rode through a couple of sprinkles but not even enough to to wet the roads. As we were hitting one of the waypoints in Powers (?) Michigan we pass a blue FJR loaded for a trip parked on the side of the road. Thinking a break would be nice, we pull a UTurn and make sure everything is okay with him.
We stop and talk for a few moments... and it was getting warm, so I peel off my jacket and he takes one look at the EOM t-shirt I'm wearing and he gets this shocked look on his face. Long story short, here's Gerry - aka: Bluestreak from the forum
He's on his way to South Dakota and well, so are we. He tags along with us.
We ride on, occasionally getting sprinkled on. Everytime I slow down and ask Mike if he wants to put his rainsuit on. He keeps saying no.
A little further on, its apparent were gonna get wet. Once again, I slow down and ask Mike (I'm wearing gear with rain liners). He once again says no. Well to hell with him, I'm putting mine on! So we pull over and while were all getting our gear on its starts raining. I guess it was around 6:30pm by this point and we've been riding since 8am. Their we are taking County roads through the middle of Wisconson and it's pitch black and raining hard. I'm thinking, no camping tonight, just find a hotel. But theres nothing around us so we ride on, then the lightening starts. I see a road sign for a Comfort Inn and make a bee-liner to it.
We end up in Rhineland WI. Get checked in and head out for a bite to eat. Afterwards, we sat around the hotel room sipping Crown Royal. Mike gets a soaker in the bathroom and blames Gerry for hanging his rainsuit in there. Around 10 we all head for bed. I figure after the last few weeks of little sleep, the ride we did that day, and the Crown Royal I'd be out like a light. No such luck, I was still awake at 2:30-3:00. Listening to it RAIN in the bathroom. It wasn't Gerry's rainsuit! The freakin' ceiling leaking like a sieve.
We were up at 6:30, so I had about 3 hrs sleep. Not good. I thought my lack of sleep was just excitement over the trip to CFR, turns out it was partly that, but I'm going through a stretch of insomnia. With the pace we had planned to get out there (10 - 13hr days) and no way to know when this insomnia would break. I bit the bullet and made the decision to head back home. I don't want to get hurt or killed because I fell asleep on the bike, and I sure don't want to force a 'day off' that we don't have, for everybody because I'm to f'd up to continue.
****.
Mike continued on with Gerry to SD. I turned around and came home. Oh. If anybody has Garmin 2820, how the hell do you REVERSE a route on it? I ended up firing up my netbook in the parking lot and reversing it in MapSucks and re-uploading it.
The trip home was pretty uneventful except for a really nasty storm on I-75. I stopped and put my gear on ahead of time in the heat and sun knowing it was unavoidable. It lasted all of about 15 minutes then I was back in the sun and heat again. So I had to stop and rip off all my gear yet again. Sault Ste. Marie bit my *** again trying to find 17 East. Following the detours and road signs it actually spit me out North of the City toward Superior. Christ all mighty what a f'd up city!
I had planned to grab a hotel in the Sault as I was getting tired. Well, the city gave me a second wind and continued on. I pulled into my driveway at 9pm.
Once again, about 4hrs sleep last night.. I feel like a vegetable today..
Hope everybody has a safe trip!
