Hi gang. Just wondering if my condition is present on most FJRs. I'm not concerned, but with my warranty running out next week, and with only 800 miles, want to make sure this condition is normal, which probably is.

First of all, I'm happy to report this is the first bike that has even rear disk 'drag', which means it's perfectly true. No worries there. What got my attention is if I accelerate the rear wheel a bit faster (by hand, obvioulsy), I hear a growl from the final drive gears. If I turn the wheel slowly, I just hear the rear disk dragging a bit, which is perfectly normal. If I turn it faster, the gears make this growling noise, like if something is too tight in there. Again, I'm not worried, but want to make sure it's 'the nature of the beast' :D . I might be a bit worried after owning a BMW K1200  .

Bike only has 800 miles, and I put fresh synthetic oil in there (and the engine) recently. Just the normal metal dust on the magnet, so nothing untowards happened the first 800 miles. I will (hopefully) make my first semi-long trip on Sunday, putting an additional 1,000 miles or so over 2 days, just before my warranty expires. Well, never mind; just checked, and my warranty expires Sep 9, which is TOMORROW :dribble: . And it was extended 3 months due to the 'altitude sickness'. Oh well, I'm on my own then, but just curious. This bike is mechanically very noisy compared to previous bikes, probably needing a few thousand miles of break-in. That goes for a little whine in the tranny as well. We'll see. Thanks for you comments anyway. And no, I've never bought an extended warranty, and don't plan to buy one, but you can try to convince me :p . I usually ride 3 to 4K miles a year (trips only), but due to the altitude sickness, I had to cancel my long trip last September; hence the low miles. Good day.

If the magnet was clean, then no worry-if the gears were takin' a ****, it would have the evidence-ditto bearings. When a final drive gear set or bearing takes a ****, the damage is fast-and massive, ask any German Motorcycle owner......... ;)

Thanks man. And yes, that's why I traded my BMW for the Yammie. The single-sided-swingarm is beautiful, and makes for easy tire changes, but I think it makes the final drive less reliable than double-sided ones. Hope it doesn't give me trouble. With my light weight, solo riding, and excessive maintenance (a bottle of M1 is only $7), it shouldn't (knock on wood). Thanks again Radman.

The way I see it to stop the growl completely is to .... stop turning it by hand... no really! <_<

That's how I clean my wheel buddy (spin the wheel with one hand, while holding a rag with the other), and how I noticed the unusual noise. Sounds different than all my other bikes with shaft drive, and I've owned a few. Seems normal so no biggie. Warranty is over in 5 hours anyway :p . Later.

That's the way I clean mine too. Heard it before on both of my FJRs and I think the growl is normal.

The rear drive on the FJR is the same drive Yamaha has used for many years on the VMax and other bikes. It really is a bullet proof unit. If you were to have a problem with yours it would be a 1 in a 1,000,000 event.

Drive On!

Thank you very much for the reassurance folks. Just came back from a 700-mile trip, with the odo reading 1,600 miles, and it growls less now, so it should be breaking in. Thanks again. Case closed :) .
