I was reading through (again) all the rules etc and I had planned on getting my neighbor to certify my start and end; however, on the IBA site, it states:

Before the start, you will want to try gas stations to find one that has a receipt with a good location, time and date on it to document the start of your ride.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Date and time is most important for your start and end receipts. They are much less critical on the other ride receipts. We know there are mistakes on many station clocks - spend your time concentrating on the start and end receipts.

Fill up your gas tank and obtain a computer printed gas receipt with a legible date and time stamp. NOTE: Many gas stations in both the United States and in Europe are printing an "invoice number" which is actually the time of the transaction for example, you might see Inv# 113557 which means 11:35:57 am. You may also elect to use a bank ATM receipt with a time and date stamp for your start time but please leave with your tank full.
So my question is, should I not then fill up the night before I leave so I can have my neighbor sign and then just take off? Do I need both?

This is why the very next sentence you omitted from the quote is important:

* * * THE COMPUTER TIME STAMP WILL BE YOUR OFFICIAL STARTING TIME * * *
Yes, you need both. If you fill up the night before and get a receipt....that will be your official start time...unless you get ANOTHER receipt as you depart. The witness time is not the official time.

So, I suggest witness signature the night before and fuel up the morning of....or witness and fill up when you leave.

Also, moved thread to the LD area of the forum...

Good luck on your ride.

Ok sounds good. I can get witness statement the night before. What do I put on the time on the witness statement? The time that matches my starting receipt?

edit: OK I got it. Witness statement can be gotten the night before to certify mileage. Then I'll just get up and out at o'dark thirty and hit the first gas station.

Let me know if Ive forgotten anything hehe

An ATM rx is just as good. Fill up the night before. Get a good nights rest and hit a local ATM for a receipt in the morning. Leaving at o'dark thirty will sometimes make it hard to find a station open nearby.

The list on the IBA website is thorough and gives you everything you need. Might want to re-read it a few times, make a checklist and go from there. :)

ride safe!
Yes, I have. And for the witness signing, it doesnt specifically say it can be done the night before. The way its written it implies it should be done when you leave.

Well 2 Guys with IBA numbers have posted it's fine .... Gotta say I'm pretty sure ignuts knows the rulz pretty well by now.

Crap!! I need to turn in mine from July of last year. :dribble:

Doggonit Bust... Send in that paper work!

You earned that IBA # by draggin' me all around Lake Huron-

I can't ride with you again until you get that nifty license plate

frame. Its a critical farkle so your bike runs faster.

In a perfect situation you would get your witness statements with the time and mileage

at the time they are signing, then get a receipt and be off on your ride.

I use fire stations if I cannot set up a preferred witness (3 Digit # member)- I have gone at

10 pm to get sigs for a 4 am ride before. In those cases I will enter the action in my log to

clear up any doubts. Then I will get the receipt at a gas station next to the starting highway.

Your ride will start with the time on the receipt.

When you end your ride reverse the order. Your ride ends with the time on the receipt.

THEN get your end witness sigs.

Oh thats a good point. So I'll get his witness sig for mileage the night before, put in my log that Ive done that, next morning get receipt for fill up and go. Sounds good. Thanks for the tip I wouldnt have thought to put that on the log!

I've been planning a SS1000 also. Then I heard of this run comming up in Sept. I think I will wait till then and let them take care of most of the documentation paperwork.

a SS1K allows for a sig with a little delay (emphasis on "a little") as explained by IBA front man Ira on several occasions. The most important parts are time/dated gas receipts at the start and stop. Then the log and the witnesses.

What do I put on the time on the witness statement?
YOU don't put anything. the witness puts the date and time they signed. that's why you don't want to get a witness too far before/after the end of the ride. THEY fill out the form. I change the title to "Verification Form" so that those who see the word "witness" as a legal term have fewer concerns.

So I'll get his witness sig for mileage the night before, put in my log that Ive done that, next morning get receipt for fill up and go.
AFTER you enter your updated ODO reading and time/date of the new receipt. LOG everything. It's better to have too much detail than not enough.

Find a gas station that has automated pumps (shouldn't be hard) - gas up at the same time of day as when you're planning to leave, then just top off on your departure date. No worries.

Good luck and tell us all about it!

it's fine to have a date/time stamped gas station receipt for 10 cents

in my case, the receipt printer was broken at the half way "to/from" fuel stop, so with a full to the brim tank, I rode across the street to another fuel station, put in a quick squirt of fuel, and used that "proper" receipt as the official one. No reason you can't do the same at the beginning of your run if you so choose.

Bought a pack of gum to stop the clock at the end of my first BBG.

Rode another 50 miles to my intended destination and got an LEO to "Verify" my final form.
