Hey all im thinking of gettiing an 05 fjr with 12000 or so miles on it, after reading all of this about ticking im not sure if I should still by it or not, from what I have read if the bike doesent tick after a certain amout of miles I will be safe, is this right? So I guess the best thing for me to do is have them start the bike and listen for the tick, if theres no tick the bikes ok? is there anything else I need to pay close attention to before I buy a 05 fjr?

You will shortly be told to search for the information.

The executive summary is: Don't worry about the ticking. If you get it, Yamaha will fix it for free even outside of warranty. Many 1st gens never develop the dreaded tick. Mine hasn't.

You could use the issue to leverage a lower price from an unknowledgeable seller.

Don't worry, ride happy.

What the good Fred said.

Mine started ticking at 18K and MamaYama made good on it 2 months ago. If it does tick and need to get fixed, consider it as having Yamaha pay for an early 25K valve shim inspection that you'd otherwise have.

Well I took it for a spin today, and all I have to say is WOW its a fun bike to ride, luckly no ticking when it was started up so thats something I dont need to worry about, its been awhile since I have ridden a shaft driven bike, is it normal to make that whirling noise when coming to a stop? is seems to be coming from the axle, I thought it was normal but I figure I would double check with ya guys.

It was also nice to sit on a bike and actually see behind me with the stock mirrors, being 6'1'' I felt some wind blast but it wasent all that bad, the bike definatly has some power to it, not like my old fz1 but its there when you need it, turning was a breeze, way better than the fz1 was thats for sure.

The only problem was I dident buy it, were still a little apart when it comes down to the price.

They want 8500, it has almost 13,000 miles, it comes with givi tail bag and bar risers, the rear tire looks like it will need changed soon.

I'm trading in a 1999 triumph thunderbird sport with 6900 miles I still owe on it so with the negative money on it and the buying price I will be paying 230 a month for 60 months, I said I would do 200 a month and they said that I need 1500 bucks as a down payment and it will give me 199 a month for 60 months. They wont budge off that 8500 for some reason.

Any suggestions?

Yup. Sell your trumpet first. Get that out of the deal. That would be where they are screwing you the hardest.

$8500 is an OK number for a dealer price considering you get the $500 trunk in the deal. 13k miles is barely broken in. Don't even give that a thought.

I doubt the Dealer would consider this, but if you can get the exhaust headers off and look into the exhaust ports for signs of oil, usually the 1&2 cylinders. I've had mine off a number of times for different reasons (putting headers on, etc.). I've followed this for years and it seems there are far less '05s affected. I heard even far less the more miles that are on the bike, although that was not absolute proof-some with higher miles did develop "the tick," but I don't believe many. Have them run the bike and listen, it would be obvious. The best sound bite I've ever heard is on Dale Walker's site where he demonstrates the sound of his slip-ons-you can easily hear that his has the tick and what it sounds like.

Well I've got an '05 with 37k & no problems (knock wood), I seem to recall the number as being somewhere between 2 and 4 percent for tickers. Mammy Yammy fixed em all, so no big deal there. Fred's advice above is good, if you can sell the Triumph privately, then all you have to talk to the dealer about is straight dollars, not funny money and dollars. Good luck & let us know how it turns out.

I get that same noise from the front end. It must be normal. T.
