The Italian Scallion
Since fellow FJR rider "Caba" moved to the town of Kosice (koh-she-tse) in Eastern Slovakia we have been in touch hoping to hook up sometime ( the whole story here). The opportunity came a few days ago when I set up a business meeting with a customer of mine located some 20 miles to the north of Caba's new home. Small world, huh?
So I flew into Vienna and on to Kosice on an incredibly clear spring day and managed to take a zillion pictures in this virtually unknown jewel of a city of 250,000. Met up with Caba, knocked down a few (excellent) beers and also had dinner in a great old restaurant. As it so often happens with other FJR riders worldwide, Caba and I hit it off immediately and I sincerely hope we can ride together sometime soon.
The next day I had my biz meeting but I also managed to scout out some very scenic hill roads. Too bad the road surface goes from decent to messed up and caution is required when riding aggressively.
Eastern Slovakia is a little-known corner of Central Europe, located as it is a mere 40 miles west of the Ukraine and directly south of Poland. The Hungarian capital of Budapest lies some 200 miles to the south-west. Small wonder then that the Catholic cathedral in Kosice can claim to be the easternmost one in Europe.

This is the Hlavnà Ulica (Main Street) of Kosice.
..and here are two shapely young ladies, not a rare sight in this blessed town
This is the Gothic St. Elizabeth Cathedral
The city theater was built in the late 1800s
..and is centrally located on the town's main drag
another scenic view of the Cathedral
A typical Slovak landscape
The twisties are inviting but the road surface can be tricky
Local and Czech beers are first-class
The gentle foothills of the Tatra Mountain range, a section of the 1000-mile long Carpathians
