For you guys that own both. If you were shopping for a bike to simply commute back and forth to work and not really do any long trips on. Which bike would you perfer. Now I am also talking doing mostly highway driving.

This is not a typical speed comparison but an actual use???

 
Here is why I ask. I bought this bike mostly to save gas driving back and forth to work 45 miles each way. I stayed away from the all out sport bikes like the R6 or R1 because I was afraid that on the highway the high rpms of a sport bike would drive me nuts, comfort, wind protection etc. Kind of like buying an RV to go to visit your parents that only live an hour away. :D

 
I have an R1 and an FJR. I will take the FJR at times that I would not consider taking the R1. Much more comfort is the reason.

you can get better gas milage out of a vw tdi, in the 50's neighborhood. I belive it'd be cheaper to operate in the long run, will last longer, can run biodeisel which you can make yourself for $0.80 a gallon, and you don't get we in the rain.

But, you want a bike, so get the bike you'll enjoy and want to ride the most. Don't fool yourself thinking the bike is "saving money."

If commuting was the primary use of the vehicle, I'd tend to something like a Bandit 1200 or even an old Pacific Coast. In fact, if the commuting distance were short and was mostly urban, I'd go for a single: KLR, DR650, or F650. They're so much more nimble, handle pot-holes easily, and get great gas mileage. Or you could go with a a compromise touring, commuting, do-everything bike is the V-Stroms.

The FJR commutes fine, but is overkill.

I own a 2001 R6 and an FJR, and for just day-to-day driving, the FJR is easier to live with - more comfort, room, weather protection, more relaxed highway cruise, shaft drive, luaggage, etc. I enjoy the nimbleness of the R6, but it's my short twisty day trip bike and track bike, not my commuter. It's mostly a PITA unless you're pushing hard in the twisties, then it's nirvana.

The FJR is mine, no one can have it. I am asking as a friend of mine is looking at getting his first bike and trying to help him understand the differences. The reasons I got this bike as I stated before are just that but I wanted all this "comfort" to ride back and forth to work.

I have never owned a sport bike but know that this is more what he is looking at.

I have a 03 SV1000S for short rides, going out with the guys and the 05 FJR for trips to NH,VT and other points of interest. I really like the FJR for its 6.6 gallon gas tank, low maint of the drive shaft, wind protection to extend the riding season and the side bags for storage (tire repair kit, rain gear and extra clothing) and of course the riding position.

 
I have both, an FJR and R1. I ride the FJR to work mostly because of the comfort and storage. I can put the helmet in the bag and don't have to carry it in. Plus I can carry stuff to work also! The R1's for play only really!

 
Sparky I'd have to second what MarkJ said, especially as a first bike, a KLR 650 or Suzook 650. Am I the only one that thinks an R6 or an FJR for sure is an aweful lot of bike for a first timer. I've seen quite a few 16 year old quadriplegics in the last few years...Cmon Dad...its only a 600. I'm a firm believer that learnin the dirt first has helped me most in my 36+ years of ridin and it sure hurts less the first time down. Just my .02.....Stay safe.

Played with an FZ1 for a bit today. While I could not afford one right now, and it's not an R6 (but falls into the sport category), I would have no problem using it for my daily 50 mile commute. But then, you should probably take into account the way I tackle said commute.... :D , and I have used 650's for commuting for years.

I like the changes for the 06 FZ1 except for the exhaust. That would be a fun commuter. With a tail bag it would be good for week-end credit card camping too.
