Whatever unit you choose, I think we are all in agreement that you've got to "pack" something. LEO is gettin' serious!!Apache

Hey Smitty, I've got a question for you... at night, is the HARD light an issue? Do you lose your night vision with that thing blinking in your face?
THe nice thing about the HARD unit is the little LED light is movible. During the day I have the light pointed right at my eye ball, mainly becues I'm usualy wairing sunglasses and need a direct beam. If I"m not wairing shades or its not very bright out, I just point it away from my eye ball a bit, but still in line of site of the LED.

At night, I acutaly turn it and tuck it back into my helmet more. I dont even see the little LED unit at all, but I do see it go off becuse my helmet lights up.

I've made it sound like you are constently adjusting, but thats not really the case. But its nice to know that you can move it, while motoring down the road, when you need too.

After seeing and using alot of the other options out there, I find the HARD to be the best setup so far.

As for the batteries, I was able to ride over 3400 miles on one set, and I even left the unit on over night ones. The unit does have a switch so you can turn it easy for LEO's or other stuff.

For how cheap it is (relitive to most MC farkel) its worth checking out IMO.

Y'all should take a look at the post Espia4ci did on radar detectors. Here's the link: well, can't figure that out so it's under Parts and Accesories - Wish List, Help with prioritizing. Really a good write-up and may influence your decision on whether to buy one or not.

I appreciate Espia4ci's comments, but having used a radar detector and had it alert me to the presence of LEO's that I otherwise would have zoomed by in the past, I think I'll stick with my V1.

I understand that many people have their favorite detector and I appreciate that.
Do you all depend on the display lights to get your attention?

Do you turn the volume up so you can hear it directly or do you use a headset or earphone?
I used to... when I was running a Whistler... when they nailed me on my Wing because I could see the display in the direct sunlight and couldn't hear the tone over the wind noise or through the ear plugs. By the time I appealed the ticket, to get to a court that would extend deferred adjudication, it had cost me $400 and 6 months of long distance phone calls and certified mails.

The V1 was something I'd not bought because I thought it cost too much. :haha:

They sure showed me. Didn't they? :erm:

I've been running a V1 ever since and no ticket any time I had it with me (1 when in the truck without the V1 because I was in a hurry). Fortunately that one was again just a fine (smaller) and no "record" because I took a traffic safety course.

The V1 is piped into my audio by going either through the CB/Intercom and then into my ear monitors, or straight to the ear monitors via the MixIt. I then hear the audio alert no matter where my eyes are scanning while riding. I can whip my eyes back over to the detector to see what, where and how many.

Two comments.....

1)When the police are using radar it should not be on all the time. It should be in standby mode (no radar beam being emmitted) until such time as the police observe a vehicle speeding. They are required to visually track the vehicle and estimate its speed. If they feel that the vehicle is speeding they flip the radar set to active and the beam is emmitted. The radar detector will alert the rider that there is radar but if the police have turned the radar unit on for you the warning sound you hear will be confirmation that you have a ticket coming your way. Radar detectors work the best when the police are turning on their radar for other vehicles then you get the warning that they are enforcing the speed limit in your area.

2)If you get a ticket on your bike you need to be paying more attention....The range at which a radar set will pick up a motorcycle is not very far. If there is any other traffic in front or behind the bike the radar will pick it up first. You can see this yourself at some construction sites on the highway where they have the display board for your speed....You will see the speed popping back and forth between vehicles.

I have my own radar set if anybody is up my way and wants to see the range that their bike gets picked up at for themselves. I bought the set as a surplus for clocking my radio controlled airplanes when I was into that hobby.
