I have been doing a lot of searching for a bike. I haven't ridden in several years. My lady wants a cruiser (Road Star/Harley) but I'd rather have a bit more fun along the way. I guess I'm the guy that Yamaha is moving their marketing towards... you know more touring/cruising with some sport. I have pretty much settled on the FJR. It's going to piss off the old lady but I am purchasing a 2006 FJR1300.

But I have a question. Where do you fit in a radio?

TIA

Some manufacturers make accomodations on their sport-tourers for a radio, but I don't know where you'd mount one on the FJR.

Speaking from my experience owning a BMW sport-tourer with a radio, they are pretty much worthless at Interstate speeds, especially while wearing a 3/4 or full-face helmet.

Using some of the newer technology, you could use one of the helmet-based intercom systems to implement an MP3 playe or portable CD player. Some of these systems come with an FM tuner built-in, but I don't know what kind of range they might have.

I am not sure I can post a pic, so here is a link to a pic of my bike with XM radio connected... https://www.pbase.com/mward/image/48568378 more pics at https://www.pbase.com/mward/fjr

In addition, I have an Escort 8500, and a Garmin 2610. All are wired through the tank bag, which is where the Autocom unit is connected. I cut the speakers off the headset assembly and wired in 1/8 female stereo jack instead. I had a pair of custom fitted silicone ear plugs with built in speakers made my NowHearThis at a rally. She (Marilyn) is at most motorcycle shows.

I can cruise the interstate all day at 80-90 and hear perfectly fine. Well enough that I can even listen to talk radio and enjoy it. I have a Jarow flip helmet and love it...would hate to give up the flip up feature and flip down sun shade, but it sure is noisy. With this setup, it is just about as good as it can be.

Tank bag is one place. What type of radio do you want? AM/FM? CB? MP3? Sirius Satellte?

Here's what I did.

CB/Intercom w/Aux audio input

I then use a MixIt to feed multiple aux audio into the single input of the above radio. I feed in the Valentine 1 radar detector and either an MP3 or my Sirius receiver (mixing volumes with the MixIt). The MixIt and Sirius receiver (or MP3 player) sit in the tank bag. The V1 sits on the ECM Shelf from

FJR Goodies.

I feed the audio into a Helmet Comm 4 from Air Rider. I then split off from the headset jack (no cutting of wires) using an adapter (shown in the next link) and into a set of custom Ear Monitors from "Now Hear This".

I zip-tied a cheapo AM/FM radio along with an IPOD-shuffle (no disk) to a RAM plate (2"x6") connected to a RAM-HB2 on the clutch side reseviour.

PS: I think I've spelled resouviour about 15 different ways on this forum and never repeated a spelling. :haha:

Excellent! Thanks for the pics and suggestions.

I'm a gadget geek and all the doo-hickeys you have attached makes me very very happy.

The radio I was thinking about is 2&6 meter Ham. Although I really like the CB option as that is more than likely what anyone else I may be riding witih has.

I don't use a radar detector but I do use scanners and my garmin GPS should fit nicely to boot.

Thanks!

And I thought that I'd be leaving my toys behind. :D

FWIW I currently own a HD Eglide. I purchased it because I have a hip problem and now that I will be having it coorrected, it's time to bump the hog.

Bear in mind I came from the dual sport community (BMW R1150GS) and moving to the Eglide was a massive mistake. It was fun for a little bit but it did not really turn me on. Now the FJR is on my short list along with a Suzuki V-Strom.

Don't let her talk you into a Harley. IMHO you will regret it.

As far as speakers go ever hear of Rumble road Powered speakers? Rumble road

I have a starcom intercom system that has a plug in for audio source (among other things) and my wife and I use an IPOD...we cruise down the road with 16 gigs of music (so far)...Works great :)
