Why is it that I am forced by law to keep to 55mph along route 5S (4lane divided), yet NYS Trooper X can blow by me (no blinkies on) at what could be estimated at easily 85mph this morning??????
For some reason, this totally pisses me off! He wasn't responding to any calls, he was just hauling ***! I say this with some degree of certainty because I caught up to him as the road hit a rash of traffic lights and he waited patiently at each light, then spooled it up to at least 50mph in the 30mph zones.
I have a huge respect for folks who put their lives on the line in the name of 'justice' and all, BUT I am phukin tired of the local LEO's doing whatever the hell they want on the roads! Did you know that seatbelt laws and the lovely NYS cellphone law does not apply to LEO's? phuk that. They have ******* CB radios in their cars!!! why do they need to talk on the cell without hands free sets?
ahhhhh. I feel better.
Now that I am of a more clear mind, I need to respond appropriately.
Bluehammer was upset at what he percieved to be a blatant flauning of the law by a LEO. First, Bluehammer does not know what the officer was responding to. As someone stated he could be responding to a call that did not come under the code 3 general order requirements. There are a myriad of calls he could be responding to that required him to get there quickly but not in a code 3 mode.
It is more likely than not, that he had a purpose for what he was doing other than personel reasons. As far as no seatbelt, in CA LEO is exempted from that law. The reason cited is officer safety. We have many things hanging from our uniform that can and do get caught by the seatbelt when trying to exit. It is a personal choice of the officer to wear or not wear the seatbelt.
I will not respond to the use of a cell phone because in CA we do not have that law.
Lets put the whole incident in perspective, the officer was percieved to be violating an infraction, not a misdemeanor or a felony. Not everyone who violates an infraction or a misdemeanor is held responsible for that action. This includes LEO and the general public. I have been an LEO for in excess of 18 years. During that time I have been on motors, SWAT, and several other specialty assignments. I have not cited everyone I have ever stopped, so that pretty much does away with the argument that only LEO's get special treatment.
I have also paid for tabs of homeless people that were being threatened with arrest for not paying a restaurant tab. I have also let people go for other misdemeanors instead of arresting them. So not every member of the general public goes to jail when they can.
As far as an LEO? I have arrested a LEO for DUI, misdemeanor spouse abuse, and theft. I have no need for a LEO who violates any misdemeanor of public trust.
I have received a traffic citation in Colorado and took it because I was wrong.
This is special to FJRottie:
You say your job is more dangerous and I cannot debate that since I do not know what you do.
My question is, at least once during your work week, do you go enter someones home knowing that you are not welcome, not knowing where a weapon maybe hidden and not knowing if this person will not go to jail at any cost. Have you ever got to watch a 10 year old boy die in front of his grandparents home as he is pinned under a car and there is nothing you can do? Do you go to parties and get asked questions about "this cop stopped a friend who was speeding....." or "what do you think of the Oakland Riders getting acquitted?" Have you ever been to a party when no one asks you about your opinion on something related to your job? It rarely happens to me. Do you get to go to the store with your wife/significant other or kids without someone stopping you and asking "what is happening with my case?" Do your kids get to go to school and have to answer questions about "that party your dad busted?" Have you ever been shot at? Do you have to deal with taking the freedom away from someone and putting them in jail? Can you be sued and held personally liable for the actions of someone who you supervise and possibly lose your house to some crackhead even though you were never at the scene? Would you receive last rites and run into a burning, collapsing building? 23 police officers and over 300 firefighters did.
I never said my job was the most physical, dangerous, or hardest job. You were putting words in my mouth.
I chose my job and there is nothing I would rather do. So please do not tell me your job is harder, dangerous or what ever just as I would not say that to you. My only comment is that most people do not know half of what LEO does. It is not COPS or Reno 911. It truly is a job that you are never away from. Even on vacation, I cannot get away from my job.
As far as 'bad cops' sure there are some out there, just as there are bad doctors, electricians, teachers, store clerks, etc.... But the only ones you hear about are the bad cops and that skews the opinion of the general public. I have no tolerance for LEO's that break laws of public trust. But officers that break an infraction? I give them the benefit of the doubt and do not lump them into one category.
For those of you who wish to read my original response? It is captured in quotes throughout this thread.
