Just picked up a used Corbin Heated Dual-Canyon. Time will tell if it's a worthwhile upgrade

Loved the Corbin on my SV1000S. Having said that, I've never ridden longer than 300 miles/day on the SV.

P.S.Don't forget a patch/plug kit or sticky strings and a pump (something like a Slime or similar) for the trip. Don't ask me how I know that having both is very important.
I was on a ride to Yosemite with my buddy on his BMW K1200RS. Just when we pulled up for lunch in the foothills about 90 minutes from Yosemite, after we'd backed into the curb and were entering the eatery, his bike suddenly crashes over because--WTF!--his rear tire is flat as Minnesota. He is crushed because, not only is his turn signal now dangling like that bullfighter's eyeball when he got gored by the bull but flicked it away until he could dispatch the bull at which time he dropped and was carried into the infirmary, but as far as he's concerned, his trip is over.

I just grinned and said, "Don't worry about it. We'll fix it after lunch and be on our way as easy as pie." Well he was mystified; but after lunch I pulled out my stringy patch kit and portable pump. He watched in amazement as I patched and inflated his tire as good as new. We probably lost 45 minutes all told. And that's all I gotta say about that.

Thanks Joe, I do have a complete patch kit and CO2 canisters under the seat from PO.

Somebody mentioned "Slime" ?

I was always under the impression that was for SMV's or ATV's at best. Must be improved since I last used it on a wheelbarrow ;)

I did one longish trip on my FJR when first acquired and three things needed to be fixed:

1). Seat - hind quarters were toast after 1500 miles - solution was a Russell Day Long

2). Right wrist (and not from what Bust or Zilla might suspect) - solution AVCC cruise from Murph

3). Back - solution was Helibars triple

With those 3 changes I've since made 2 trips of 5k+ miles and end up at home dirty and dusty, but ready to turn around and head out again if only work and family schedules would allow.

Those are the kind of things a shakedown ride might point out before you're in the middle of a long trip and find out you've got some ergo issues that might need sorting out.

Good luck and welcome!

Dump the co2 and get a small $15.00 air compressor for as much air as you may need. I replaced the cig lighter plug for the end that matches my battery tender plug.

Spot tracker is nice for the family to keep an eye on your travels if you like to wander off your intended route.

I personally wouldn't use the Slime Tire Sealant to fix a flat, but I think JB's reference to Slime was for their 12v pumps, which are actually quite nice. I use one in my on-road tire kit, and have never had a problem with it.

Hi Pista, appreciate your thread! ++1 on the MB powder. It has saved my *** a few times.

Good tips here. I, too am planning to do my first LD ride in June. It's an organized ride by the BMW club of Colorado, the Colorado Classic 1000. My best buddy rides a 1200RT. There wiil be 140,000 ft of elevation change in 1000mi in 24 hrs, very little slab. I'm skeered a little. I've got some 5-600 mi days under my belt but not under very demanding conditions.

Not sure of your age, I'm 60 and a bit (ok, a lot) out of shape. I'm doing some core strengthening exercises and practicing the Master Yoda riding position. It helps.

On advice from this thread, I'm removing the CO2 from my kit and stealing the Slime pump from the trunk of my SO's Bimmer.

Good luck on your adventure!

1. No RDL showed up recently in my price range. I picked up a nearly new Corbin. Loved it on my SV1000S, hope that does the job.

2. CC again not in my budget. I will have to do with a "Crampbuster"

3. My bike came with a set of risers. My last bike had clip-ons so the riding position on the FJR with risers felt like a dog sitting up and begging. But i'm getting used to them now and really enjoy the upright riding position they provide.

+1

I'm 51 and in shape. But that's only because round is a shape!

Not certain why CO2 is frowned upon, but I also plan on getting a pump based on input from others with lots of experience.

Sounds like you will have a great time riding in the beautiful mountains out there. Thanks for the encouragement!

Just a note for those who are getting a small air compressor. Make sure you have an adequate fused power source to run it. It will pop the fuse for the socket in the glove box in no time. If the wire for your battery tender pigtail is sufficient (make sure), I think a 10 amp fuse should be OK. (maybe a 15??) In any case, don't find this out at the side of the road somewhere when you really need it.
