Did an oil change on Saturday - new oil - new filter

changed to Golden Spectro and instead of 20/50 - went to 10/50

put 4 liters in plus filled the oil filter prior to installation.

lines up almost exactly between the high and low mark when bike is on center stand. Maybe just shade higher than halfway between the marks.

here's the problem

didn't get to ride saturday or sunday - but monday on the way to work - OIL warning light was on when I started the bike. Didn't notice till I got down the block - turned bike off and checked oil level (thought perhaps bike leaked or something) - oil level was the same - turned bike back on and oil level light went out.

Tuesday - started bike up and oil light came on - rode to the end of the street and it went out.

Wednesday - same

thursday - went on after starting and stayed on till 2 blocks away - actually I turned the bike off at a light and restarted and light went off.

questions:

what is the prognosis?

Oil level slightly low?

10 weight instead of 20?

don't tell me it is synth oil instead of dyno

bad sensor?

what else is there?

The oil sensor measures by level, not pressure, so you're fine. It appears that the oil sensor is right on the edge of tripping. I'm guessing you could add, a half a quart or even less, and the light will go away.

Well, I know it is not the viscosity. I run 5w40 synthetic exclusively. Light has never come on.

Was it a yammi filter?

Either that, or without your knowledge somebody jacked up your fuel tank and ran a Moto Guzzi under it.

I run 5-40 and fill it between half and max. That should solve your problem.

See ya next week chickey.

:drinks:

+1 :D

How did you fill the oil filter before installing? Didn't most of it run out in the process of screwing the filter on??

And, did you follow the owners manual instructions to run the engine, shut it off, wait a minute or two before checking the oil level?

I do this on occassion if I think about it. Normally only fill it half way, start at the bottom of where the filter screws on to , tip it up and screw it on. I really don't know if it helps the cold start with the oil not getting up to the engine fast enough.

I had the same thing happen. Fill it to the top line and you will be fine. As stated, the oil light is an oil level indidcator, not a pressure indicator.

first answer -

yes- it was a yammi filter

other questions sort of answered.

I filled the oil filter prior to putting on and only a little bit dribbled out. I didn't totally fill it - filled it once and let it sit (and watched level go down) then filled it almost to the top.

checked the oil tonight when I got home and if anything it was a tad full. Over the top of the upper fill mark - basically only a tiny bubble showed at the top.

I drained about 2 cups of oil out and now have it right at or just a tad below the upper fill mark. We'll see what it does in the morning on the way to work.

thanks for the input.

looks like it was too much oil. Drained the cup or so out last night and everything was fine this morning.

whew

Same with me on the oil light. When it first came on got nervous but it went away.

The light weight oil you are using is corroding the pressure sensor contacts. You need to change your oil again.   :glare:
