Rear ABS Not Working ABS Light Not Coming On

I agree with checking back to the basics now that you know the ABS system cycles. Definitely bleed the system. If you had a constant ABS light on, then I would say it may be a bad wheel sensor. Why not check them anyway (resistance should be 1.2-1.6 kOhms).

If a wheel sensor were bad you would have found a code set in history.

In the spirit of KISS, I'll also say that the ABS most likely won't engage under 7 mph. I believe that the system uses 6 mph as a cut-off point.

As an update, I bleed the brakes, changed the brake fluid to no avail. I was hoping may be the rear abs would loosen up and fix it itself, it hasn't.

I finally took the bike to the dealer, and they diagnosed the 'abs modulator unit' as failing, $1200 part, ouch. Not sure what I will do now.

I did all that, it still failed. I know of two others with the same problem. A better rant, test your abs each time your ride because the abs warning light, can't be trusted.

I had a ?? fjr in my shop for rear abs brakes not working earlier this year and no codes.. and one of my mechanics was starting to lean to replacing the abs motor/modulator when I took it for another test ride, mind you both test #1 and #2 both passed with flying colors and brakes bled numerous times, while on test ride I locked up the rear a few times and then all of a sudden the rear brake was locking up on it's own, back to the shop and brakes stinking hot... pulled apart and rebuilt rear caliper... cleaned and new orings and new piston and believe it or not the problem was solved... ABS worked perfect after that... so moral of this story is possible/suspect rear brake caliper is hanging up a bit and wont fail test #1 and #2 when wheel isnt moving but while moving down the road abs wont activate a rear brake properly. inspect pistons and seals replace as neccessary this will be a whole lot less expensive then the other alternative.

While the crash damage was being repaired at Roseville Yamaha, I had a used ABS unit installed. The used part was from JBs old bike and is now working great on my bike.

I just got a follow up call from Zac at Roseville Yamaha, he was making sure I was satisfied with the repairs. While I was telling him how great the service was the subject of the rear ABS problem came up. His FJR had the rear wheel lock up while braking and would not release, I never thought of that kind of saftey issue.

Do we know how many bikes are affected with this failure? How many are just waiting to fail, could we have another saftey recall issue?

I think the nature of the failure allows it to happen on bikes without the rider knowing. Could be a big problem we are mostly unaware of.

This problem could contribute to an accident, or possibly cause one. Could be my broken ribs,and lack of sleep is causing my paranoid thought process. Better safe than sorry.

Just experienced this on my 05 at about 65k miles. Rear caliper locked while riding. It actually warped & melted the caliper. I was in the middle of the IBR, and a friend loaned me a caliper. After bleeding, it would not unlock, even with no power. Also no ABS light, We bypassed the rear ABS and it worked fine,

I've since replaced the rear caliper and rotor (it was badly scorched) but I'm not enthusiastic about the replacement cost of the hydraulic unit. Searching for a salvage unit.
