Rear Caliper Compatibility & Timesert Questions

I just discovered that one of the threads on my 2007 (ABS) rear caliper only has about 2 or 3 threads left. So my choices are a Timesert or a used caliper, since I already bought a seal kit the used caliper does not have to be perfect.

There are some calipers on eBay, but one is from a 2008 FJR, and from what I've read here and on the Yama site there was supposed to be some difference due to the upgraded ABS unit. The 04-05 ABS rear calipers would have a bit pressure difference because the GenI doesn't have linked brakes.

Does anyone know if the 2008 rear caliper fit the 2007, and how much performance difference there might be using an 04/05 ABS rear caliper on an 07, I mean would it mean locking up/engaging the ABS on the rear wheel all the time?

If I went with the Timesert solution which kit would I need to get? I would need to Timesert one (would probably do both) hole where the #6 bolt screws into.

The repair size you need is M10-1.25, this is the thread size of the caliper sliding-pin bolts.

There seems to be an issue with threads stripping in the caliper. Don't know if there's any preventive maintenance one could perform which would keep those threads viable for the long term.
You can put anti-seize on the bolt threads. Mine stripped the first time I pulled the bolts, so there wasn't much "preventive" to do. :(

Makes me wonder if they got some of the slider grease on the threads which caused it to get overtorqued at the factory? Or if they use the same gorilla they use on the oil pan bolt?

Since I put on a new caliper, you can be damn sure I put anti-seize on it now! Plus I don't torque it that much, since it only needs to be torqued enough to not fall out.

I think yours was overtightened at the factory or by the stealer. Mine has lasted over 118k miles. It's a PITA nonetheless though.

 
The '07 and '08 calipers are identical. They have the same part number.

Thanks for the info, didn't think to look sine having read all the stuff about the ABS change on the 2008.

There are a lot more 04-05 parts available in the second hand market, so wondering if the 04-05 ABS rear caliper would work? I know the part # are different, but visually they look the same. Since the 04-05 ABS didn't have linked brakes I read there might be some issues with how it would work on a GenII, so wondering if anyone has tried it?

I guess I'd have to agree with that statement. I just pulled my rear caliper apart for cleaning a few minutes ago. The forward slide pin screwed out very easily, but the rear pin needed a ratchet to get all the way out. Sure enough, those threads are destroyed. Great! The bike only has 12K miles on it, so I don't know if the factory or the prior owner is to blame for cross-threading or overtightening.

I'm not sure I'm comfortable with helicoils for a long-term repair, so I'll replace the caliper. Unfortunately, I see that Yamaha doesn't sell just the caliper part by itself...you can only order the entire rear assembly for approx $176. At least then I'd have a set of new pads and other little bits of hardware to keep as spares. I'll definitely use a lower torque value and anti-seize on those threads in the future!

 
I have used Time-serts on many occasions at work to repair damaged threads. (I prefer them to Heli-coil) When properly installed they are usually stronger than the original thread. I would not have an issue with repairing the caliper threads.
