Does anyone know if the rear caliper is the same on the 2004 and 2008 models?

I stripped the threads on mine and then a friend drilled the hole at an angle (rather than straight) to fit a helicoil so it's royally screwed - can only find second hand ones for older models.

Best

Gareth

Don't know if the GenI and GenIi calipers are compatible but, my dealer broke mine trying to get it out once. Yamaha informed them that they didn't have spare calipers due to the fact that no one had ever ordered one before. They make one for every bike on the assembly line.

It was going to take 6 months for the Vender to get one to me. This was weeks before taking off for an SFO Rally. I was so pissed! (Our pissed, Not your Pissed) that I went into the managers office with my hair on fire and yelled at him for about 30 minutes. He made the Service Manager take the rear caliper off a bike on the showroom floor and I was on my way very happy.

Good a luck on your search!

Suggest you contact 'Ernie' at the FJ Club - If anyone can help he can............... You may have to become a member to get his help but at ~ £17.00/year it's money well spent IMHO

There was a member who contacted me about parts off my wrecked '09 - he was from the UK. In the end, he found a scrap yard full of police FJR's to scavenge parts from - let me see if I can dig up his username. It was extra-ordinary_guy; his profile shows Ireland - Gerard was his name if I recall correctly.

Worst case, I have a '09 caliper & assembly in my parts bin...

fwiw - on bikebandit.com, the part number for a rear caliper assembly shows a different part number for an '04 ABS and an '09. Not sure on inter-changeability, but I'd guess they won't.

www.partshark.com says that the part numbers are totally different.

Ebay and amazon are no help - can't see a good enough picture to compare.

If it were me, I'd hold off until I get more information.

Well, surely in my 03/abs Euro--04/abs for USA,my bike is a november 03/model the rear caliper is from the 06-07-08/model..!

The bleed screw is installed in the side area of the caliper like the 06/models
I think the bleed screw in the 03/04/05 models is installed in the upper side of the caliper..correct?If the Yamaha has install for i don't know the reason,a caliper from the 06/07/08model in my 03/04 model i believe this caliper can installed in all the 03/04/05 models!Surely,if the bleed screw in 06/07/08models is installed in the side area of the caliper then my caliper is from a 06/07/08 model.!I will post a picture here later from my caliper to see..

It cost 187$ here:

Thanks everyone - look forward to your photos Mihalis. It might just be minor improvements that don't alter mounting / performance - in which case I can live with that.

extrememarine - are you looking to sell your spare? if so how much inc p&p?

Thanks

Gareth

Just i took the pictures:

+1 - The rear caliper on my '05 also has the sideways bleeder screw like is shown on the '06 and later parts breakdown.

[edit - same as the pictures above]

It appears that Yamaha did a cut and paste in their parts fische and used the non-ABS caliper's line drawing for the ABS bike parts reference, as those drawing are identical, showing the bleed screw out the top, although clearly that is not what comes on an ABS bike.

Of course that still doesn't prove that it will fit, but it makes it more likely that it will.

Mihalis, that bike is just too clean, you need to get out & ride it a bit more...............................
Agree Donal!!But the economy here is a little bad the last years..so have parer anything..

Fred,

Probably from the 03/Europe model 04/Usa model they improved the rear caliper and they use this improvement caliper in the next models..06/-12..

I really do not see how an '04 caliper would work on an '08. Heck - you have to have completely different pads for a GenI vs. GenII - like 4 or 6 pads per caliper for GenII vs. 2 pads for a GenI. IIRC, this is because of the linked braking system, isn't it? Do '04 ABS bikes have the linked system?

Gareth - I would think that if you are unable to source one locally, extrememarine's caliper would be your best bet.

Outta curiosity - if your buddy who drilled the helicoil hole crooked (sounds like something I'd do) at least gonna compensate ya with a few dozen pints?

I believe the differences are only for the front calipers..

The 4 pads per caliper is for the front brake only. The rear looks pretty similar for the ABS but no way (other than trying it) to tell for sure.

Hi folks

Here is the 04 caliper for sale https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/160986837149?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Here is my caliper: https://docs.google.com/folder/d/0B1D0uxSV8NCXR2R2VTBoOWV0MUU/edit?usp=sharing

As some said, the bleep nipple is different - that's the main difference.

Two questions:

1) Can you spot which pin isnt straight?

2) Does anyone have the distance between the floating pin holes on the caliper for the 04 model and I can compare?

3) Does anyone have photos of their pins so I can compare if mine are straight ? :)

Thanks

Gareth
