It may surprise folks to hear me say that the motivation behind the oblique and changing language regarding oils used by Yamaha and other manufacturers is money. They cut a deal with some oil producing company to package an off the shelf product with the Yamaha name. They then raise the price, make unsubstantiated claims of superior performance and do all they can to lead owners into believing that no other product on earth will work. They stop short of saying their product is required because to do so would mean running afoul of consumer protection laws. Yamaha may have changed their language, but no substantial changes have been made to the FD that would make any commonly available synthetic GL-5 rated gear oil unsuitable. Yamaha and the other makers want you to pay a premium for products you can buy at an Autozone for a fraction of the price. BMW (I own four) wants $22 for a quart of gear oil. I can get a quality brand of the same stuff for $10 less at an auto store or Wally World.
Well that is certainly one opinion. And while there may be some truth in there, it is my opinion that there is quite a shortage of factual information also.
My opinion, and that is all that is after using cheap ass GL-4 and GL-5 oil since 1984 without a hint of a problem, is that there is a great deal of truth in there.....and note that "recommended" is quite different than "required".

Gosh, you really didn't need to make a new Forum rule just for me, you have always demonstrated excellent communication skills in letting me know my opinion doesn't count for jack shit but in honor of having a new Forum rule written especially for me I'll buy the first round the next time our paths cross....you can buy the second, third, fourth, and fifth.

The owners manual specifies "Yamalube Shaft Drive Oil Exclusive" (part number: ACC-SHFT-EX-00). It is spendy and not all dealers are carrying it but that is what I am using.

The US manual has changed for 2014, and I personally see no problem with them recommending their own products as long as they don't require it.

This oil is "exclusive to FJR 1300/VMAX." Does that mean you can't use it in anything else?

You are right! Yesterday no one knew my name and today I am Forum famous....all because I used gear oil costing less than $2 a quart for 30 years and finally came out of the closet.

Don't sell yourself short 007. You are also known for your happy attitude and your extensive knowledge of suspension mechanics and dynamics!

We are all famous for something, somewhere.

For my part I have been using a Valvoline Synthetic Blend. That allows me to have the best of both worlds, synthetic and conventional. Then, to make it even better, I pour it into a Honda Gear Oil bottle so it looks like I paid full price for it. (It also makes it much easier to fill the drive housing)

With every other fuid specification there is a generic definition (DOT4 for brake fluid, API viscosities for engine oil, etc.) The rear drive specification has no such thing. In fact their "regular" shaft drive oil says specifically not to be used with the V-Max or FJR1300. One quart of their "super goop" lasts about five changes so it amortizes out to mousenuts per change.

I have a couple of quarts, it will last me years and years. So there.

Not arguing. Just being curious.

So there.

I use Mobil 1, don't change it very often (as per the manual), still using the stock crush washer, 55K on the bike and the rear wheel still turns nicely. By virtue of where I live the bike spends lots of time at 5K RPM + in fifth gear (like yesterday coming home from Montana I hit reserve from full at 140 miles)...

So there is some empirical evidence that the Yamaha brand oil is not necessary.

I dunno...with that kind of shitty mileage, I'd say you've got some serious drag somewhere. :p :p :p

I do--it's called a rifle windscreen, a head-wind and too much twist with the right hand.... I swear that rifle makes a nice pocket but in a headwind they are a mileage killer.

Complain and then participate. Seems like you'd ride hundred miles to look for a reason to be offended.

Go fuk yerself douche canoe, you and your fuqing argumentative bullshit is wearing thin..
Why don't you take your dumb fuking ass outside and play in traffic.

Thread closed and I get time off.

Naw, it's the Mobil 1 pumpkin oil you're using. Betcha' you'd pick up 3-4 mpg with the fancy Yamaha stuff.

Yes, but it had subtle legit undertones starting out.

It's what's known here as "threadjacking" and it does get noticed.

https://www.fjrforum.com/forum//index.php/topic/157893-monthly-admin-actions/

No time outs for anyone even when they wanted one.

But the personal attacks and counter attacks got the thread locked. It still has some valid discussion in it, so not to NERPT because it was caught soon enough.

--update--

I have been told by both people that this was meant to be harmless ribbing which I clearly misread. No points were awarded to anyone so none need rolling back but I have privately apologized to both and am now doing so in the thread
