Rear Drive

I have changed many rear tires on my FJR but during the last install I noticed that there is some play in the rear gear (in the hub that the axle goes thru). I realize that this gear is rubber mounted in the cush drive but should you be able to move the gear by hand. It is possible that there always was some but I never noticed this before. If any of you fine folks are in the middle of a tire change, give that gear a little twist and let me know if there is any movement. Any comments would be appreciated.

Okay, don't like to see someone left hanging. I'm not in the middle of a tire change or able to twiddle the gear, but I would be very surprised if you weren't able to turn it. It would allow you to take up the slack or lash in the entire drive train in either direction all the way back to the clutch, it seems. With your bike in gear on the ground, you can move it a little ahead and a little back; same thing with your (manual transmission) car, right? Just natural slop in the drive train. Shifts, I would think, would be very notchy and clunky without some lash for cushion.

You can't turn it but it will wiggle when I try to move it up and down. It is the up/down sideways motion that I'm questioning.

May be a case of "the blind leading the blind." Up and down and side-to-side: well, that's a helpful clarification. But ya got me stumped, pard. And I hope I won't be doing a tire change until...oh, about next June seeing how we're getting close to the start of our annual 4-5 month winter layup. Hope someone else knows.

being a glutton for punishment and since I've never had the tire off and checked the drive splines i will remove my tire tomorrow. call me at 3:00 pm EST and i will check whatever you want. (315)877-6820 ask for roy. my bike has 3600 miles and has only been wheelied once.

Canadian FJR,

How much play do you have in the gear cog? That gear is not rubber mounted, that is only the oil seal. Just behind the oil seal is a shim and the bearing for the gear cog. You haven't noticed a shimmy or anything lately have you?

Mystery solved, Roy confirmed the movement in the rear spline is normal due to the rubber insert behind it. I knew that those wheelies didn't hurt anything.
